THEE BLOG + HOW Magazine!

TheeBlog-HOWmagazineAmbassador It’s the last day of May so let’s finish it off with some great news! You might have noticed the new banner on the right hand side of the page so let me explain… I’ve been an avid and loyal reader of HOW Magazine for over a decade (awkward moment as we all realize how old we truly are) and I am stoked and proud to share with you our latest achievement as THEE BLOG has been selected by HOW Magazine as a 2012 HOW Design Ambassador! I know I’ve mentioned this before but will never get tired of thanking you all for the amazing support and love for what this humble blog does and strives to do every single day. It all started as a challenge and personal haven for my own writing, rants and inspiration and has grown beyond my wildest expectations, again, thanks to you! I can only promise bigger and better things (more great news coming soon) so keep visiting us on a daily basis, keep the emails and comments coming and of course, share us! THANK YOU!

Albert, Ernest & the Titanic

TheeBlog-AlbertandErnest

I’ve always been fascinated by the mystery surrounding the Titanic. And no, not talking about the Leonardo DiCaprio version -although I still get very emotional when I hear Celine Dion at work… So, what could make a Titanic story even better? How about some beautiful letterpress books and a lovely process video! ‘Albert, Ernest & the Titanic’ is a letterpress printed book which tells the story of Titanic’s on board printers as they travel on her doomed maiden voyage. Shot one evening during the final stages of production on location at Distillers Press, NCAD, Dublin.

Alphabet Bags

TheeBlog-AlphabetBags You already know that if there is a typography or type-related site, project or product out there, it’s going to be featured and shared here :) Well this one is for you ladies! Over the long weekend, I stumbled upon a cool site combining different styles of bags and wallets with interesting letters and statements, all done using beautiful type. Now, you know very well I am a type geek but I am also a fan of big purses that can fit cameras or extra batteries and lenses (although my wife is not always thrilled by the idea of carrying extra items). And even bigger fan of customizing your personal items to brand yourself the same way you usually help your clients through stationery and brochure printing. Check them out after the jump!

Ödland, Østersøen

TheeBlog-Ostersoen0 Stop motion videos have been around for quite a while, but I’ve noticed that this arduous and very detail oriented technique has gained a considerable amount of attention and love lately thanks to amazingly creative videos like the one I am excited to share today. This music video for Østersøen is part of Ödland’s newest album and was completely shot utilizing intricate tiny props, creative constructions, beautiful seamless transitions and of course… stop motion. The admirable creativity of this video, in addition to the nostalgia and relation to one of my favorite music videos from my early High School years (Tonight, Tonight by The Smashing Pumpkins) simply did it for me n a dark and rainy day… Check it after the jump!

The Lively Morgue

TheeBlog-TheLivelyMorgue Being the History and Photography geek I am, last month I shared a collection of beautiful (and addictive) photographs of NYCity released by the City’s Department of Records, dating all the way back to the mid-1800s. Thanks to all the great emails I received about this post and the many requests for more, I continued my online research and immersed myself in the fascinating world of history and editorial Photography to discover new gems I am sure you will love. We are all familiar with The New York Times‘ work and tradition, but have you ever asked yourself what happens to all stories and photos after they have been used? Well, here’s your answer, they end up at “The Lively Morgue“.

The work of Florian Nicolle

TheeBlog-FlorianNicolle Florian Nicolle aka NEO is a French Graphic Designer and Illustrator with an impressive collection of collage-style work combining grunge patterns and elements with clean lines, subtle colors and great balance. I must admit that Florian’s style of work using patterns and watercolor makes me think of a mix between Shepard Fairey and Sara Blake, and that’s always a good thing. Check out some of his work after the jump!

Melvin the Machine

TheeBlog-MelvinTheMachine Remember those awesomely hypnotizing automated and extremely overcomplicated machines on movies like The Goonies, Edward Scissorhands or Back to the Future? You know, the type of machines built by combining dominoes, bowling balls, wires and balloons? Well, in case you were not familiar, these inventions are called Rube Goldberg machines (deliberately over-engineered or overdone machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction). Melvin The Machine is a beautiful portable and traveling machine with a mission, travel the world to meet new friends. And lovely stamped postcards to document it…

Portraits by Brigitte Lacombe

TheeBlog-BrigitteLacombe There’s something magical about good portrait Photography. Perhaps it is the essence and personality iconic Photographers like Avedon, Leibovitz, Halsman are able to capture and share, or simply the beautifully intriguing contrast of black and white tones combined with impeccable lighting and technique that makes us smile. French Photographer Brigitte Lacombe’s beautiful work is a great example of this. Panic Room

TheeBlog_PanicRoom I love hotels that go the extra mile to set themselves apart and please guests. And no, I’m not talkign about Continental breakfast… I’m talking about hotels that understand the importance of art and aesthetics. We’ve seen (and love) collaborations between the Ace Hotel and artists like the great Dana Tanamachi or Timothy Goodman, my hometown’s Icon Brickell and Philippe Starck, and many more. Today, I want to share another lovely collaboration between graffiti artist TILT and French hotel Au Vieux Panier called Panic Room. The concept? Simple, divide an impeccably white room in two by decorating one half full of graffiti and color. The result? Badass!

The Shops at Target

TheeBlog-TheShopsAtTarget I’ve always believed good design, strong branding and clever advertising are essential for organizations, specially in the retail world. Target is a perfect example of a company that not only understood this, but also believed and executed this simple formula to perfection, giving it a considerable advantage over its competition. What I personally love about this brand is that they are constantly evolving and taking on new ideas and concepts. Ideas that range from ambitious and extremely successful collaborations with iconic brands like Missoni or Jason Wu to their newest venture, The Shops at Target. An innovative boutique concept that was launched this week and that I am sure you will see soon at your local stores. Learn more after the jump!

Obey The Giant

TheeBlog-ObeyTheGiant Whether you love him or hate him, Shepard Fairey has made a name for himself in the Graffiti, Design and yes, even Art world thanks to his signature style and iconic imagery. Although most of us know that Fairey gained notoriety thanks to his 1989 Andre the Giant Has a Posse poster campaign, not many of us know much more about his early years until now, thanks to Julian Marshall, a 22-year-old film director from Washington, DC who directed a short narrative film Fairey’s early life and the origin of OBEY GIANT.
