Ragú shreds the envelope

TheeBlog-Ragu We all tend to take pride in stating we are open-minded and that we appreciate witty out-of-the-box ads and commercials that push the envelope. But what happens when products, specially those we are familiar with and consider ’safe’, decide to completely shred and incinerate said envelope and simply go rogue? Yes, things might get a tad uncomfortable and result in thousands of angry letters but to be honest, the amount of exposure, traffic and ’social buzz’ generated – whether good, bad or WTF, easily overweigh all these concerned letters and criticism. Which brings me to Ragu’s (yes, the pasta sauce) latest ad spots featuring some not-so-expected situations and experiences including dead hamsters, face licking and parents’ sex. Yup.

Banksy. Animated.

TheeBlog-BanksyAnimated There are many opinions when it comes to Banksy and his work. Some think of it as great street art, some think it’s simply graffiti and some think he’s a commercial sell-out who caters to Hollywood celebrities – I personally love his trenchant wit, and provocative executions. But what if all these pieces were animated? Serbia based artist ABVH decided to find out using few infamous Banksy pieces and released this great series of animated GIFs I want to share today.

Time for some happy news…

TheeBlog-MiamiAdSchool Today I want to share some exciting news. After being a fan of the Miami Ad School and their incredibly talented alumni for many years – and after a few guest speaking and online courses at different schools, I am stoked and honored to announce that I am joining this amazing institution starting this coming quarter! The only fun twist, I will not be joining as a student. Instead, I’ll be on the other side of the class teaching – don’t like that word as much as sharing with my students my passion and what I’ve learned over the years in this business (you know that moment when you count years and realize how old you really are…) If you know me, you know about my passion and love for what I do and I can’t wait to spend some time with a classroom full of inspiring creative people. A special thank you to the wonderful faculty for being simply great! and to my good friend Juan. Oh, and if you’re registered for my class, get ready because it’s gonna be a fun one!

Bob Dylan Lettering Experience

TheeBlog-LeandroSenna I am a sucker for inspiring personal projects, and even more when they involve lettering and type! I recently received a link from a good friend (Thank you Randy!) labeled ‘hand lettering’ and I immediately knew it would be a great one. Inspired by Bob Dylan´s Subterranean Homesick Blues video, Art Director and Graphic Designer Leandro Senna decided to illustrate the song’s lyrics in many different beautiful styles. If you enjoy type and lettering as much as I do, you will love Leandro’s work as it features an impressive amount of hand drawn type varying in tone and personality while maintaining an enviable level of talent and skills. Check out some of my favorites and a cool video…

Some of my work… Miami ZOO

TheeBlog-MiamiZoo I know I don’t usually post much personal work (and I truly thank you all for your emails asking about it) but there are a few exceptions and projects that I feel might help/inspire someone out there, and also tell my story and vision when it comes to Design. So, today I want to share a project I’ve had archived for quite some time already and that will make its public debut today. But wait, don’t think this is a happy ending story. It’s more of a ‘real world’ story I want to share as this was one of those projects that almost made it… Back in 2009, the Miami Metro Zoo was looking to refresh its image and I was asked to elaborate/propose a re-brand to help achieve this. This is the process story of my work and proposal…

I Am Always Hungry

TheeBlog-IAAH I love finding new and inspiring work online, and today’s post is a prefect example of what I am talking about. Yesterday, while exploring the interwebz, I discovered the lovely work of New Orleans based studio I Am Always Hungry and after checking their entire portfolio and enjoying some of their videos, I knew I had to share it here :) Their work consistently and effectively combines clean, modern and simple lines with organic treatments and textures, giving each piece a unique look. Check out some of their work after the jump!

Brand New Conference 2012!

TheeBlog-BrandNewConference2012I’m back! As most of you know and probably noticed, things have been a bit slow around here since I was out of town, enjoying some much needed vacation. But don’t you think for a second that because I was traveling, business was not being take care of – in fact, I did my fare share of working, learning and preparing cool material to share. You see, part of this vacation was dedicated to what now has become a yearly tradition and must-attend event for me. I had the pleasure of attending the 2012 Brand New Conference and today, as it has become also customary, I want to share some of my photos and experiences, specially for those of you who were not able to attend. Now, let me begin by reiterating that this Branding conference is by far my favorite ‘Design-related’ event of the year. It always amazes, charges and inspires me -and everyone I’ve met- and I officially recommend it and suggest you attend next year’s to experience this amazing event first-hand. It is not every day that you can meet and spend an entire day with an eclectic and impressive group of Design masters such as Massimo Vignelli, Mike Rigby (Interbrand Australia), Howard Belk (Siegel+Belk), Aaron James Draplin (Draplin Design Co.), Simon Manchipp (Someone), Yolanda “Yo” Santosa (Ferroconcrete), Miles Newlyn and Yah-Leng Yu (Foreign Policy). Now, let me tell you some of my favorite moments… BUT before I get into that, I strongly recommend you purchase the lecture videos from this conference. It’s the only way you will really understand how awesome these conferences are!

NYC, Brand New, Fashion Week & DC!

TheeBlog-Vacation2012 While writing an email today, I realized how simple #hashterms can serve as a way of communication and perfectly narrate a short story/message. You see, in 4 words I was able to let my friend know where I’m going, what I am doing and what #hashtags I will be mostly using during my trip. Don’t get me wrong, I am an avid advocate of proper communication, but when you’re in a rush… this works wonders! Ok, back to today’s post. September is here and it is time for some needed, deserved and way overdue vacation, and I wanted to let you know I will be out of town for a couple of days, hence there might not be many new posts… (I am purposely trying to disconnect). I will try to update or re-post some of my/your favorite features and I promise I’ll bring back some great material, goodies and of course, photos from NYC, Brand New Conference, New York Fashion Week and DC. BRB!

Happy Birthday Freddie!

TheeBlog-FreddieMercury Yes, unfortunately, Music has taken a tragic detour into Suck Valley. But never forget this my friends! There were once amazingly talented artists with pseudo-superhuman charisma and power to inspire us, make us smile, cry, sing out loud, fall in love and give us chills… And today I want to celebrate the birthday of one of Music’s finest. Happy Birthday Farrokh Bulsara, or.. Freddie Mercury!
Now, blast some Queen at work and rock out!

Irident – Bursting Soap Bubbles

TheeBlog-Irident_FabianOefner They say children tend to have short attention spam and are usually distracted easily. As a father of two boys, I can definitely attest to the first statement but the second one… could be debatable. Specially if you’re in a plane, at a crowded place, well you get the point. Now, if you are a new parent or plan on having kids in the future, here’s some valuable advice. There are two things that would definitely stop a kid (and most adults) on his/her tracks and grant you absolute attention. Candy and bubbles! Let’s face it, there’s something magical about bubbles, and today’s post will make you stop what you’re doing and observe in awe. Zurich based Photographer Fabian Oefner decided to photograph and study the life (and burst) of bubbles. The result, stunning and hypnotizing photos!
