Will be back soon…

TheeBlog-CaribbeanVacartion As much as we love what we do, it is also good and healthy to disconnect every now and then to take a vacation and clear up, recharge and of course, get inspired. There won’t be any posts this coming week but I promise there will be some interesting things coming up soon (and photos!). But for now, I am off to discover Turks and Caicos, St. Thomas, St. John the beautiful Virgin Islands and Enjoy the Caribbean!

Double Exposure Goodness by Sara K Byrne

TheeBlog-SaraByrne If you are a Photography lover, I am sure you are familiar with the term ‘double exposure’. And, although in theory and paper it might seem simple, it is a style that I’ve only seen few people execute well. Sara K Byrne is definitely one of these talented few able to create beautiful photographic magic by tastefully combining photos. This Portland based Photographer discovered this trick while playing around with her Canon 5D Mark III, and has created stunning pieces of work since. Check out some of my favorites after the jump…

Memo Randoms

TheeBlog-MemoRandoms Remember those ‘inspirational’ posters? Yes, those old, ugly and extremely tacky posters that never inspired a single soul. Yet, there are offices out there still using them… What if we can replace them with some posters that might actually make more sense and could really make things better for everyone at the office? Designer Jason Franzen decided it was time to take action and created Memo Randoms. A series of posters with subtle, witty statements and recommendations for a better office/world. Check them after the jump or head over to FAB to purchase them!

Abandoned Star Wars Sets

TheeBlog-AbandondedStarWars We all know about the crazy budgets and expenses when it comes to Hollywood films and how intricate sets or even small cities are built just to generate a perfect, and realistic atmosphere. But what happens to all these sets once films wrap and move into studio post-production? Apparently, they’re simply left behind… NY based Photographer Rä di Martino discovered an abandoned Star Wars set in Tunisia after seeing a tourist photo and tracking it with the help of locals. Her series called Every World’s a Stage features great photos of the Tatooine set , or what’s left of it, from Star Wars IV.

Target’s Grand Central dollhouse

TheeBlog-target_dollhouse Target’s constant (and consistent) cool ideas are always a great example of good, inspiring design and great execution. Today I want to share one of their latest gems. In order to promote a new home decor collection called Threshold, they unveiled a not-so-typical display inside one of New York’s most iconic landmarks. To celebrate the launch, Target decided to go beyond the usual “imaging how this would look…” sales pitch and built an open dollhouse inside New York’s Grand Central Terminal! fully decorated and set up to allow visitors to instantly purchase items being displayed… Big kudos to Deutsch Inc. for pulling this off.

RUSH

TheeBlog-Rush Yankees vs Red Sox, Real Madrid vs Barcelona, Lakers vs Celtics or You vs that bitchy coworker that makes your life miserable at work. We all enjoy good ol’ classic rivalries. Not too long ago, I learned about another historic rivalry involving two of the best Formula 1 drivers of all time, James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Their contrasting personalities, intense rivalry and impressive level of competition not only fascinated F1 fans but the entire world. RUSH is a new film by Director Ron Howard featuring the lives and rivalry between these two F1 legends. Based on the trailer, lovely European locations and 70s film vibe, I can’t wait for its release. But for now, here are some photos and behind the scenes video to get your engines running. Get it…

IRON MAN 3 Concept Opening Titles

TheeBlog-IronMan3_AshThorp Iron Man 3 opened last weekend and it is no surprise that its weekend gross earnings surpass the $175 million mark. Considering these numbers, I am going to assume most of you went to the movies this past weekend but I will still drop the obligatory ’spoiler’!!! disclaimer. I’ve always been the visual type that admires, studies and loves film titles, so you can imagine my joy when Marvel decided to go all out on these and hire badass companies and artists like Method Studios and Danny Yount (Iron Man 3 end titles) to name a few. So, to keep this Iron Man vibe going, today I want to share a collection of concept photos and videos created by the impressively talented California based freelance Designer and Illustrator Ash Thorp, who has also work on titles for movies like Thor, X Men or Total Recall. These were commissioned and created as the opening titles for the movie, but we all know now that the theatrical version began with Tony’s monologue and Eiffel 65’s ‘Blue’ instead. Hopefully we get to see them as a bonus once the DVD is released. For now, enjoy the awesomeness of Ash’s work!

Google celebrates Saul Bass

TheeBlog-Google_SaulBass We all love good films. And if there is one thing we love more – or as much as – movie trailers, it would definitely be opening and closing title credits. Film titles have become an art and category of their own, sometimes even overpowering their own films - think Blue Valentine just to name one. If you’ve been to one of my classes, you already know where this is going… Today, Google celebrates the 93rd birthday of one of Design’s most influential, inspiring and recognized icons, the fantastic Mr. Saul Bass with a lovely reel featuring some of Saul Bass’ most iconic work. Yes! this is the man that started it all back in 1955 when he created the titles for The Man with the Golden Arm, created a beautiful niche and inspired millions of people including yours truly.

LeBron X MVP

TheeBlog-Nike_X_MVP As a proud Miami native and Miami Heat fan, I am confident we’ll win another Championship this year – regardless of that ugly and rusty loss against the Bulls last night. Sorry Heat haters, but you know it is inevitable. Last night, LeBron James accepted his 4th MVP award in front of his home crowd, becoming part of a select group of athletes that have been able to achieve this impressive status and part of Basketball’s history. Yes, we witnessed history! If you watched the game, you might have noticed LeBron’s colorful shoes during the ceremony and first quarter. My son did. So, after the expected… “Oh man! I want those!!!” I did some homework and figured I would share with you also. Nike celebrated LeBron’s achievement by creating these special edition LeBron X MVP shoes, combining colors and patterns from each one of LeBron’s X series shoes since 2012.

Vertical Horizon

TheeBlog-VerticalHorizon I’m sure you’ve heard about China’s vertical urban growth and the lack of real estate. French graphic artist and photographer Romain Jacquet-Lagreze was so impressed and inspired upon his arrival to Hong Kong that he decided to photograph its architecture and chaos, creating a series called Vertical Horizon. For some reason, some of these remind me of my Monday mornings.

JC Penney apologizes

It’s no secret that many brands, in their desire to ‘modernize’ or to simply change their look because a new CEO thinks it’s the cool thing to do, have received the wrong type of attention and response from not only the press, but more importantly, consumers. Gap, UCLA, Pepsi, that Miami baseball team are just examples of re-brands gone wrong. But what to do when your plan backfires? Some play it off and blame their Marketing team, some ‘decide’ to undo things and go back to normal, and some, like JC Penney, go a little beyond… Their latest ad is an open apology and ‘let’s be friends again?’ letter to its customers. Well done. Admitting you have a problem is always the first step to a positive recovery. But, would this make JC Penney as a company or store any better? Doubt it.

SNL by Mary Ellen Matthews

TheeBlog-MaryEllenMatthews_SNL For many years, Saturday Night Live has introduced us to some of the most iconic and best comedians out there. And it is probably the only show that still brings in ratings for NBC. As a ‘visual’ person, I’ve always paid extra attention to different elements including opening titles, fonts, graphics, and bumper photos. And speaking of photos, today I want to share the lovely work of Mary Ellen Matthews who’s been SNL’s official Photographer since 1999. Her signature quirky, fun, and memorable photos adorn all intros and commercial breaks every saturday night, and here are a few, plus a behind the scenes video courtesy of Plum.
