BIG HERO 6

TheeBlog-BigHero6 With Marvel basically slaying box offices around the world, and people frantically trying to learn about comics in order to understand new movies, characters and plot twists, it was just a matter of time before Disney jumped in. Yes, many of us were concerned about this, but for now, it seems like Disney is doing the smart thing – staying away from the main money makers, and creating new Disney-style Marvel inspired films instead. Big Hero 6 is Disney’s newest animated film, scheduled to release February 2015. And although the official trailer won’t be out until later this year, here’s a cool and fun little preview. I can already picture my kids going crazy over this one…

Lovely WWE Illustrations by James White

I’ve always been a huge fan of James White aka Signalnoise and his unique and mesmerizing style of illustrating, designing, and of course, his enviable use of color. I am sure you’ve seen his work on many agency or studio walls, or all over the internet. His latest project, for example, blew up Instagram as it brought great memories to us 80s and 90s kids who grew up with the glory days of the WWE. Today I want to share a great video by the folks at Lynda, documenting James’ process and explanation behind this awesome project. If you ever wished you could witness James at work, and learn from his techniques, you’re gonna love this video!

So, Shakira rips Woodkid

TheeBlog-Woodkid_Shakira Being that this World Cup’s song is not what everyone was expecting and has received a lot of criticism, Shakira decided she would step in again and save the day by releasing a song (remember Waka Waka) and a new video featuring a couple of iconic players like Neymar, Messi, and of course, Piqué. There’s only one little problem. The video is a cheap, blatant copy of Woodkid’s Iron music video – you know, that lovely music video we enjoyed a couple of years ago (HERE) . The copy is pretty obvious. From the way the set is arranged, to the elements, animals, effects and even camera shots. In fact, they’re shot in the same order! There’s no such things as “inspiration” when you pretty much recreate shot by shot another video and switch an owl with an eagle. And for those of you thinking I’m hating, I am sorry, but if there’s something I truly hate, is copies and unoriginal people cashing in on someone else’s work. So yes, I will call you out. I mean, it’s Shakira, did they really think nobody would notice???

Beautiful Book Covers by Mike Mahle

TheeBlog-BookCovers_MikeMahle You know that old saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”? Well, I say Why not?. As a Designer, I proudly consider myself a visual judger, specially when it comes to items I want to purchase, read or wear. For the record, know that I am not talking about people. In that case, if she looks like a wslut, chances are, she is a slut. But we can talk about that some other time… Back to the point. Book cover design is one of the oldest forms of Design and today I want to share a collection of new covers combining great illustrations with lovely Typography, designed by Mike Mahle for Rock Paper Books featuring classics like Frankenstein, Sherlock Holmes, and The Art of War. 2014 FIFA World Cup Song

So! The World Cup finally kicks off in 22 days, and if you are like me, you’re already warning friends and family that you will be unavailable and disconnected during game hours, or planning get-togethers and BBQs to watch the games. I mean, we wait four long years for this! Since we’re talking World Cup, the new music video for the official song was recently released and it features Pitbull, Jennifer Lopez and Claudia Leitte. Unfortunately, it’s not what I (and perhaps many) was expecting for a Brazilian World Cup. Yes, no other song will be as powerful and iconic as Shakira’s but… Why the would give it to Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez?? The painful lyrics are beyond poor, don’t even rhyme, and feel half-assed. The only good part is when brazilian singer Claudia Leitte steps in and gives the song some much needed brazilian flavor and credibility by dropping 4 lines in portuguese – And some serious legs. With so much Brazilian talent and with such a rich musical history, WHY PITBULL?

Mad Men Final Sets

TheeBlog-MadMen_Sets When it comes to great TV shows and their elaborate sets, Mad Men is definitely topping many lists as it has managed to create and maintain an impeccably accurate aesthetic and addictive plot for seven seasons. The evident amount of research, passion and execution of each set built for the different seasons is remarkable not only for its accuracy and attention to detail, but because it kept evolving as the years passed, reflecting on how characters and the world around them changed. To celebrate the show’s final season, InteriorDesign launched a photo collection of the last beautiful sets created by Matthew Weiner and his team.

Write to Massimo Vignelli

TheeBlog-MassimoVignelli Woke up to some very sad news coming from New York this morning. Mr. Massimo Vignelli, one of the true iconic legends of Design, and an incredible source of professionalism, knowledge and inspiration is very ill and will be spending his last days at home. Whether you are a Designer or not, his work touched many lives and is still around (Google him) inspiring many of us. I had the enormous pleasure of meeting and spending some time with him last year while in New York and he was not only inspirational but a genuine, kind and amazing gentleman. Since Massimo has decided to spend his last days at home, his son Luca would like all those for whom his father was either an influence or an inspiration to write him a letter. This is a special and touching request, and I urge you all to be part of it and show a legend like Massimo how much he means and has done for us. Keep reading for information…

Font Men

You may not have heard much of Jonathan Hoefler or Tobias Frere-Jones but you’ve seen their work. Before their recent nasty, $20 million split, they collectively ran the most successful and well respected type design studio in the world, creating fonts used by everyone from the Wall Street Journal to the President of the United States. Font Men, gives a peek behind the curtain into the world of Jonathan and Tobias. Tracking the history of their personal trajectories, sharing the forces that brought them together and giving an exclusive look at the successful empire they built together. Doesn’t matter what the reasons were… it sucks that they split up. Just saying.
