Art Basel Miami 2014

TheeBlog_ArtBaselMiami2014 As most of you know very well, every year – every December to be specific, Miami turns into a unique, extravagant, classy, and busy city full of art fairs, shows, music, inspiration, and great food. This year, like every other year, my mission was to visit as many art fairs, galleries and shows as possible (it is extremely hard) as well as catching up with a couple of friends that visit Miami to work on their awesome projects. Now, I know it’s been some time since Art Basel 2014, but I promised I would share photos and here I am to deliver (had to go through hundreds), and to give you, who could not be in Miami, a little glimpse of what you can experience and enjoy for one entire week.

But before we get into the cool stuff, I want to thank again my friends and great folks at Design Miami, SCOPE Miami Beach, Miami Project, and of course, my ├╝ber talented friends @Alexis_Diaz, @never2501, and an Art Basel regular, Shepard Fairey.

Oh, and if you are wondering, all photos were taken with my iPhone 6. I got it a couple of days before Basel so I decided to travel light (no camera or lenses this year) and test the quality of its new camera. Gotta say, I am pretty impressed :)

As it has become a tradition every year, SCOPE Miami Beach was a must in my list, and I was glad I was able to check it before the crazy crowds. I love their whole beach setting, the consistency of quality galleries and art, and their ability to always stay fresh year after year. I also want to thank these great folks again for always being on top of their game and for their friendly hospitality. You rock, see you guys next year!

Now, if you’re into beautiful architecture, interior design and unique furniture, Design Miami is the perfect stop during Art Basel, specially since this year they were celebrating 10 years of pure awesomeness. Their huge collection of design exhibits and their always inspiring artists’ talks should definitely be part of your list for next year. Swarovski, AUDI, FENDI were just a few of the brands that treated us to beautiful work and tons of inspiration. I also want to thank my friends at Design Miami for always inviting us to enjoy their fair and for their always great hospitality – and lovely goodie bags! Happy Ten Years!

When it comes to Art Basel Miami, or Art Week as some call it, we all know that it’s been more than just Miami beach for many years already. Art, shows, exhibitions and art fairs have expanded all over the city, and if there are areas worth mentioning, we must include Design District, Midtown and of course, Wynwood. Miami Project is a relatively new fair, at least to me, in the midtown area, and it also features a respectable amount of galleries and artists from all over the world. Had a chance to stop by and enjoy some great art including the always stunning work of Sam Jinks (babies)

One of my favorite spots during Basel, actually, even before Art Basel begins, is of course, Wynwood. If you are not familiar with it, think of it as Miami’s sort of Five Pointz (before they killed it) where artists from all over the world come to mingle, collaborate on great shows and paint stunning murals that decorate the entire neighborhood. Here you can walk around, enjoy beautiful art, and even meet and enjoy seeing your favorite street artist work on their projects. Alexis Diaz, Nychos, Kenny Scharf, Ron English, Faith47, Reinier Gamboa, Cleon Peterson, and Shepard Fairey are some of the few names you can meet or simply bump into. This year, as the past 3, I was able to catch up with Shepard Fairey, chat for a bit and enjoy watching him and his crew work on two new murals. It was also a pleasure catching up with my friend Alexis Diaz who I love watching work (strongly suggest you check him out) and whose work always leaves me speechless. Thank you for taking the time to chat guys, and thanks for the lovely murals!

Oh! And I could not forget this year’s newest addition! Miami Ad School also joined the fun, opening their lovely new campus in Wynwood to international artists who decorated every single wall and classroom with stunning art. What more could I ask for? Not only do I teach at a great school, I also get to enjoy the most creative and coolest campus out there. Congratulations Pippa, Ron and team, loved how everything turned out!
