Manuals 1: Design & Identity Guidelines

If you are a Designer, brand manuals and guidelines are sacred to you. Well, the good ones of course. And if you are into iconic brands and the great minds and principles behind them, you are going to love this Kickstarter campaign. Manuals 1 offers a comprehensive study of corporate identity manuals from the 1960s to early-80s – the golden era of identity design. Published in a limited edition of 2000 copies in 2014, it is a lovingly assembled collection of 20 style guides. Or as Steven Heller calls them – “sacred texts, revered for how they help shift graphic design from simply an intuitive practice to a rigorously strategic one.”

The book includes design manuals created for institutions and corporations such as NASA (Danne & Blackburn); Lufthansa (HFG, Ulm E5/63); New York Transit Authority (Unimark International); American Revolution Bicentennial (Chermyayeff & Geismar); London Electricity Board (FHK Henrion/HDC); Randstad (Total Design); ABC (Paul Rand); British Steel (David Gentleman).
