The beautiful work of Jon Contino

TheeBlog-JonContino Do you believe in love at first sight? No? Well, things are about to change because today you’re going to fall in love with the sweet, sweet work of Brooklyn based Jon Contino. Jon’s work perfectly combines the best of both worlds. Beautiful, clean and clever aesthetics with the nostalgia of vintage design, illustration and tones. As a ‘vintage’ geek, I have to say I’ve been in love with Jon’s work since I first saw it a year ago and his admirable type and lettering skills have always been an inspiration. Check out some of his work after the jump!

Hello Brooklyn

TheeBlog-BrooklynNets What started as a rumor-campaign with ‘leaked’ tweets, photos and part owner JayZ’s ’subtle’ hints has finally been confirmed as the new Brooklyn Nets have launched their new logo, campaign and website. As you should know by now, the Nets relocated to Brooklyn after a few seasons in New Jersey. The move, along with a new arena and new look will not only revitalize the franchise and generate a lot of new revenue in merchandise but will also give Brooklyn a deserved home team. Design-wise, I must say I like the strong use of Black & White and boldness which is carried well on promo videos and merchandise. Unlike that garbage Marlins logo we got stuck with… Check out some photos and videos after the jump.

Pop Bottles

TheeBlog-PopBottles We all know the power and influence packaging has over society and the products we religiously buy every week. Admit it, you can spot your favorite brand of cereal at the supermarket isle simply by glancing at its package. But what would happen if we combine our familiar brands and packages with totally opposite ones? Italian artist Anna Utopia Giordano decided to find out, and combined some of the most iconic alcohol bottles with brands like Disney, Marvel, Barbie, etc. Check out her lovely collection after the jump!

Run Chicken, Run.

TheeBlog-YardBird

By now, most of you know me well and know that I love to post and share work, places or stories I like or find inspiring. You may also remember I promised to post more food-related material after our interview with our cool friend Maria Argüello (Yelp’s Community Manager) HERE And today I not only keep my promise, I also bring you a sweet new spot I recently discovered (heard a lot of buzz ) which might soon become the coolest shack in town! Yardbird – Southern Table & Bar is Miami Beach’s newest gem, and could be easily described as a hybrid between a hip SOHO bar + Cracker Barrel. This southern style shack perfectly combines lovely branding, beautiful architecture/interiors & delicious food. What more can you ask for!

It is no secret that as a society, we are exposed to hundreds -if not thousands- of brands and logos on a daily basis. Logos don’t only exist in the ‘real world’, they can also be found on the infinite number of fictional products and companies featured on TV shows and movies we watch and love. Faux•go is a cool new site that has collected many iconic logos from classics like Karate Kid, Terminator, Coming to America, Dumb & Dumber, Mad Men and many more…

TheeBlog-BrandNewConference2011
As I announced last week, I had the pleasure of traveling to the West Coast to attend the 2011 Brand New Conference in San Francisco. This is the second year the cool cats at Under Consideration (Armin and Bryony) organized this event (last year we gathered in NYC) and it could be easily described as a full day full of inspiring, educational and very entertaining presentations by über talented and respected designers/agencies from all over the world such as Vince Frost (FROST* – Australia), Christopher Simmons (Mine™ – San Francisco), Marina Willer (Wolff Olins – London), Matteo Bologna (MUCCA Design – New York) Alfredo Burga and Claudia Boggio (Infinito – Peru), Jonathan Notaro (Brand New School – New York), Ben Barry and Everett Katigbak (Facebook – California) etc… Yes, I know, and it is OK if you’re feeling jealous right now :) Today I want to share my experience, what I learned, what I liked, who I had the pleasure to meet and of course, a few inspiring quotes by our wonderful speakers.

The new St. Pete/Clearwater by Pentagram

TheeBlog-StPeteClearwater_Pentagram

Now that the BP oil spill is somehow old news, The St. Petersburg/Clearwater Convention & Visitors Bureau partnered with Pentagram to redesign their new logo which was released earlier this month showing a significant improvement and giving St. Pete and Clearwater a fresh new look. As an ex-Gulf resident, and frequent beach visitor I am glad to see the city partnered with Pentagram for this project in an effort to improve (hiring a good firm often makes things easier), attract new tourists and grow. More about this project after the jump…

HEAT Alley

TheeBlog-HeatAlley

I realized I have not posted any environmental or interior design lately so decided to do it today. And while looking through some archives, I found an old bookmark about the Miami HEAT Gatorade Championship Alley. Now I know you’re thinking… that was 2006! But hey! We won a Championship. The entire alley and locker room area was designed to commemorate the team’s achievement and remind them how sweet it was to be champs. The project was done by local agency Southern Brand Collective and later sponsored by Gatorade. I know it might not look like this anymore being that the photos are a bit old, but it is still a nice project and it is always good to reminisce.

Starbucks New Logo

TheeBlog-Starbucks
Starbucks announced they will be launching a new logo to commemorate their 40th Anniversary. Yes, 40 years! The new logo/icon/mark or whatever you want to call it, focuses on the famous brand’s mermaid by removing all complimentary type. Does it work? I am not sure yet, I guess I’ll have to see more than a cup in order to give an opinion or judge it. Wonder if hardcore Starbuckers end up hating it and killing it like those Tropicana freaks ;) I keed!

Russia 2018 it is!

TheeBlog-Russia2018
Today, FIFA announced Russia as the host of the 2018 World Cup beating candidates (and favorites) England, Spain-Portugal, and Belgium-Netherlands. I really thought this would have been an easy win for the brits but it was also mentioned they only managed to get 2 (out of 22) votes. Seriously? Check out some of the bidding material from the new winner including a video presentation of the new and planned stadiums.

NFL + NIKE

TheeBlog-NFL_Nike
The NFL announced recently that after 10 years as an official NFL outfitter, and some horrible uniforms, Reebok will be replaced by NIKE starting in 2012. Now, you may ask, was this change in partners necessary? I believe so. The old uniforms felt old, generic and simply boring. As the NFL tries to reinvent its image, this could be a smart alliance that I’m sure not only will bring the NFL back to the ‘future’, but will make some serious money as well. I mean think about it, whether you are a NIKE fan or not, you can’t deny they know how to market products and they love to spend money on advertising ;).
