Semi-Permanent Sydney 2015 Titles

Semi Permanent is well known for its great events around the world, inspiring speakers and captivating titles which seem to get better year after year. Title designer Raoul Marks’ extraordinary opener for Semi-Permanent Sydney 2015 visualizes the challenges that any creator faces when trying to do what they do: create. The sequence, which is essentially a short film, wears its influences proudly on its Ortho-Fabric sleeve — from the isolating paintings of artist Jeremy Geddes and the otherworldly imagery of Kubrick and Scott, to the Neo Tokyoite architecture of Katsuhiro Otomo and even Space Race-era issues of LIFE Magazine.

Art Basel Miami 2014

TheeBlog_ArtBaselMiami2014 As most of you know very well, every year – every December to be specific, Miami turns into a unique, extravagant, classy, and busy city full of art fairs, shows, music, inspiration, and great food. This year, like every other year, my mission was to visit as many art fairs, galleries and shows as possible (it is extremely hard) as well as catching up with a couple of friends that visit Miami to work on their awesome projects. Now, I know it’s been some time since Art Basel 2014, but I promised I would share photos and here I am to deliver (had to go through hundreds), and to give you, who could not be in Miami, a little glimpse of what you can experience and enjoy for one entire week.

TheeBlog_BrandNewConference2014QA In case you didn’t know yet, the fifth edition of Brand New Conference is going down September 25-26 in lovely Chicago. And as it is now tradition, I invited my bud Armin Vit to answer a couple of questions and give us a little preview of what to expect or what is going behind the scenes as most of us prepare our trips. We talked about why the conference moved to Chicago, the always great speaker roster, and the decision to make it a two-day event. Check it after the jump!

The STOLEN SOFAS Project

TheeBlog-StolenSofas If there’s something that I honestly enjoy as much as a well designed and consistent brand, is the vision and dedication to get involved, support, and be part of a community. And this is exactly what the great folks at Stolen Rum are doing. Not only is their product great and beautifully designed (you had me at lettering and type) but it’s also very active. One of their latest projects, Stolen Sofas, took place last week in three different cities around the world, including Miami, and it was not only a brilliant simple idea, but also a great way to introduce Stolen Rum to a new market. I was not able to attend the event, but my awesome Stolen friend Eunique was kind enough to share some photos and video. Thank you again E! and we’re looking forward to many more fun events and projects!

MIA Sessions

Those of you who know me well or that have come to know me through this blog know that I love what I do and that I am always trying to do my part to share inspiration and the beauty of creativity. I am a huge advocate of working on what you love, sharing / collaborating with others, and never settling or getting too comfortable. Unfortunately, when it comes to cultivating creativity or building a strong -and involved- creative community, Miami has fallen a bit short, which is terribly sad considering all the amazing jewels this city has to offer and the amount of amazingly creative people who live here. This is why, a couple of very good and talented friends and I decided to work together to change this scenario, to do our part. Today, I am stoked to introduce you to our new baby, a project we’ve been planning and working on for quite some time and that is finally ready to be shared and to help Miami be the place we all want it to be when it comes to inspiration and creativity. Meet MIA Sessions!

JWT London’s GIFs Exhibition

Although many people might refer to animated GIFs as the ‘cool new thing’ due to their massive boom on mainstream media, they are not that new… Au contraire my friends! Animated GIFs have been around for many, many years. To celebrate their awesomeness and how much they have evolved since they first appeared and internet cats became famous, JWT London organized a fun and hypnotic animated GIFs exhibition called Loop, featuring some of the most recognized and talented names in the business such as Robin Davey, Paolo Ceric, David Pope, Ian Acton, and many more. Check out some of my favorite pieces as well as some extras from each artist.

Brand New Conference 2013!

TheeBlog-BrandNewConference2013 Last week, I was very fortunate to visit New York City and attend, once again, my favorite branding and design event, the 2013 edition of Brand New Conference, organized by my good friends and extremely talented, hard working power-couple, Bryony and Armin (UnderConsideration). Although this was my fourth consecutive year attending this conference, (ahem, Armin) I must say that it felt as fun and refreshing as the first one, as it was full of inspiration and delivered a unique combination of talented attendees, stunning branding and design presentations, lots of learning, humor and great camaraderie. And of course, an impressive list of speakers including Stuart Watson (venturethree), Jason Klein & Casey White (Brandiose), Josh Higgis (Obama 2012 Campaign), my buddy Debbie Millman!, the iconic Bob Gill, Bruno Maag (Dalton Maag), Matt Stevens and of course, Michael Bierut. How could you not learn and be inspired with such a lineup? As it has become tradition with these post-event write-ups, I wanted to share some of the conference’s most memorable moments and some of my personal inspiration and learning takeaways, accompanied by some photos I was able to capture…

The Happy Show

TheeBlog-TheHappyShow There are many Designers who I truly admire, look up to and study. Stefan Sagmeister is definitely one of them. I mean, who doesn’t? His provocative and stimulating work has influenced us all in one way or another, and his constant search for happiness is something we should all emulate. (Specially if it involves sabbaticals in Bali!) One of Sagmeister’s latest projects/exhibitions is The Happy Show, touring different US cities and currently in Chicago until Septmeber 23rd (better hurry if you are in Chicago!) It is based on Stefan’s experiences, learnings and search for happiness during the past ten years. The Happy Show offers visitors the experience of walking into Stefan Sagmeister’s mind as he attempts to increase his happiness via mediation, cognitive therapy, and mood-altering pharmaceuticals. Add this exhibition to your must-do list.

Brand New Conference 2013 – Armin Vit Q&A

TheeBlog-BrandNewConference2013_interview The fourth edition of one of my favorite Design and Branding conferences (and you can quote me on that) is finally a couple of weeks away! Brand New Conference will take place in New York City this coming September 13th, and as always, it promises to be full of learning, inspiration, cool talented people and amazingness. And to keep the pre-conference Q&A tradition going strong, once again, I invited my friend Armin Vit, to answer a couple of questions and share some details about the planning, preparations and what to expect at this year’s conference. I am sure many of you are already booked and registered, but if you are not yet, do it! Trust me, it is that good.

Brand New Conference 2012!

TheeBlog-BrandNewConference2012I’m back! As most of you know and probably noticed, things have been a bit slow around here since I was out of town, enjoying some much needed vacation. But don’t you think for a second that because I was traveling, business was not being take care of – in fact, I did my fare share of working, learning and preparing cool material to share. You see, part of this vacation was dedicated to what now has become a yearly tradition and must-attend event for me. I had the pleasure of attending the 2012 Brand New Conference and today, as it has become also customary, I want to share some of my photos and experiences, specially for those of you who were not able to attend. Now, let me begin by reiterating that this Branding conference is by far my favorite ‘Design-related’ event of the year. It always amazes, charges and inspires me -and everyone I’ve met- and I officially recommend it and suggest you attend next year’s to experience this amazing event first-hand. It is not every day that you can meet and spend an entire day with an eclectic and impressive group of Design masters such as Massimo Vignelli, Mike Rigby (Interbrand Australia), Howard Belk (Siegel+Belk), Aaron James Draplin (Draplin Design Co.), Simon Manchipp (Someone), Yolanda “Yo” Santosa (Ferroconcrete), Miles Newlyn and Yah-Leng Yu (Foreign Policy). Now, let me tell you some of my favorite moments… BUT before I get into that, I strongly recommend you purchase the lecture videos from this conference. It’s the only way you will really understand how awesome these conferences are!

NYC, Brand New, Fashion Week & DC!

TheeBlog-Vacation2012 While writing an email today, I realized how simple #hashterms can serve as a way of communication and perfectly narrate a short story/message. You see, in 4 words I was able to let my friend know where I’m going, what I am doing and what #hashtags I will be mostly using during my trip. Don’t get me wrong, I am an avid advocate of proper communication, but when you’re in a rush… this works wonders! Ok, back to today’s post. September is here and it is time for some needed, deserved and way overdue vacation, and I wanted to let you know I will be out of town for a couple of days, hence there might not be many new posts… (I am purposely trying to disconnect). I will try to update or re-post some of my/your favorite features and I promise I’ll bring back some great material, goodies and of course, photos from NYC, Brand New Conference, New York Fashion Week and DC. BRB!

This year, the conference comes back to New York and it promises to be just like the previous two, AMAZING. As I am booking my flights and getting ready to travel to New York to attend the event, meet cool people, reunite with great friends, learn and get inspired I invited my friend and half-team behind this event, Armin Vit to chat about the preparations and how things are coming along. Check out this brief Q&A and if you have not registered to attend this conference yet, I strongly suggest you do! It is definitely one of the best conferences you can attend. National Handwriting Day

TheeBlog-NationalHandwritingDayIn case you didn’t know, today is National Handwriting Day. I’ll give you a minute to update your calendar… ready? OK. As most of you know (specially those following on Facebook) I am a full-on lettering, calligraphy, handwriting geek so I felt obligated to do my part and take 5 minutes away from the computer and write something out. Let’s admit it, we’re not even close to be as good as Hische, Bantjes or Tanamachi but it’s all about going back to basics, playing with ink & paper and having some fun…

Here Comes The Neighborhood

TheeBlog-HereComesTheNeighborhood
I know most of you who made it to Basel this weekend are, like me, having withdrawals and want even more visual inspiration. Yesterday I shared some photos and talked about WYNWOOD, and how this small and previously abandoned ‘hood’ is slowly becoming a prime spot for art, culture and expression during Basel each year (and every month during Wynwood Art Walk). Well, today I want to dig deeper and share with you (specially out-of-towners) what WYNWOOD is all about, who, why and how it all started. Allow me to introduce you to ‘Here Comes The Neighborhood’ a collection of beautifully shot and edited Short-Form Docuseries featuring the history of the Wynwood Walls, interviews with international participating artists and lots of eye candy.

Art Basel 2011 : WYNWOOD

TheeBlog_ArtBaselWynwood
Art Basel Miami Beach is an annual contemporary art exhibition (sister event to Art Basel Switzerland) held in Miami each December, and if you live here or have been here during this event, you know what great and inspiring experience it is. This year Miami was celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Basel and I am happy to say that it keeps getting better each year as it spreads throughout the city and attracts more people and great international artists like Mr. Brainwash, Shepard Fairey, RETNA, Ron English, etc. There’s one specific neighborhood, simply known as Wynwood that it is slowly becoming a MUST during Basel – as well as one of my favorite spots during this time of the year and today I want to share some photos shot this past weekend to give you a little taste of the magic and give you a new excuse to visit Miami :)

Backstage at Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

TheeBlog-VictoriasSecretBackstage
As a Designer who works in the ‘branding’ field, I have to admit that I admire and respect the folks at Victoria’s Secret for the amazing work they’ve done throughout the years, becoming one of the most recognized brands worldwide and a synonym of beauty, sexiness and elegance. As many of you know, the 2011 VS Fashion Show is airing soon (Nov. 29th – filmed earlier this month). And to prepare for this brilliant event here’s a collection of Behind the Scenes photos taken backstage by Fashion Photographer Billy Rood. If you’ve ever been to a photo shoot, specially Fashion, you know it’s not just about looking beautiful… these girls really work it!

Brand New Conference 2011

TheeBlog-BrandNewConference2011
As I announced last week, I had the pleasure of traveling to the West Coast to attend the 2011 Brand New Conference in San Francisco. This is the second year the cool cats at Under Consideration (Armin and Bryony) organized this event (last year we gathered in NYC) and it could be easily described as a full day full of inspiring, educational and very entertaining presentations by über talented and respected designers/agencies from all over the world such as Vince Frost (FROST* – Australia), Christopher Simmons (Mine™ – San Francisco), Marina Willer (Wolff Olins – London), Matteo Bologna (MUCCA Design – New York) Alfredo Burga and Claudia Boggio (Infinito – Peru), Jonathan Notaro (Brand New School – New York), Ben Barry and Everett Katigbak (Facebook – California) etc… Yes, I know, and it is OK if you’re feeling jealous right now :) Today I want to share my experience, what I learned, what I liked, who I had the pleasure to meet and of course, a few inspiring quotes by our wonderful speakers.
