Art Basel Miami 2014

TheeBlog_ArtBaselMiami2014 As most of you know very well, every year – every December to be specific, Miami turns into a unique, extravagant, classy, and busy city full of art fairs, shows, music, inspiration, and great food. This year, like every other year, my mission was to visit as many art fairs, galleries and shows as possible (it is extremely hard) as well as catching up with a couple of friends that visit Miami to work on their awesome projects. Now, I know it’s been some time since Art Basel 2014, but I promised I would share photos and here I am to deliver (had to go through hundreds), and to give you, who could not be in Miami, a little glimpse of what you can experience and enjoy for one entire week.

Pan Am Flies Again

TheeBlog-PanAm From its founding in the 1920s to its peak in the 1960s and 1970s, Pan Am set the status quo when it came to international travel. Everyone wanted to fly Pan Am, other airlines wanted to be Pan Am, and everyone wanted to work for Pan Am. Revered by the rich and famous, the traveling public, enthusiasts and employees alike, its legacy lives on to this day. And to celebrate it, Los Angeles based photographer Michael Kelley partnered with Anthony Toth, one of the world’s foremost experts on aviation history, to bring Pan Am back to life in 2014. This is the story of Pan Am Flight 120, from Los Angeles International to London Heathrow on a Boeing 747-200, Clipper Gem Of The Ocean – Specially dedicated to my brother, who is a pilot and whose love for aviation is beyond contagious :)

Nike Athlete Plane

TheeBlog-NikePlane When it comes to combining Design and Technology, there are few companies who truly like to experiment, research and improve their fields. NIKE is definitely one of them. Their constant pursuit of better and improved experiences or products always delivers game-changing solutions. This is why, TEAGUE, leading design consultancy for aviation, partnered with NIKE to develop an athlete-focused airplane, catering not only comfort and privacy, but entertainment, and features like Recovery, Circulation, Sleep, and Concentration.

The Music Hotel

TheeBlog-TheMusicHotel Remember the old days, when hotels were just… hotels. A clean room, pool and on-site restaurant were pretty much all that was offered. Well, not anymore. The impressive rise of boutique hotels has definitely changed the hospitality game. I mean, how could you not love them, they’re unique, well-managed and marketed, and offer something that big chain hotels don’t – personality and intimacy. The Music Hotel in Berlin is a great example of the passion, and attention to detail that goes into these new ‘cool’ hotels. The music-themed property cleverly based its guidance and signage system on popular song titles, making the overall experience fun, unique and memorable. Very boutique…

Coca Cola London Offices

TheeBlog-CocaColaLondon It’s been a while since we snoop around cool offices around the world so I figured we could bring it back by checking out Coca Cola’s London headquarters. Fully re-designed and built by Morey Smith Architects, also known for their Red Bull, Sony or Möet Hennessy work, the building hosts 300 employees and is decorated with new and vintage Coca Cola items including signs, bottles, and art.

Mad Men Final Sets

TheeBlog-MadMen_Sets When it comes to great TV shows and their elaborate sets, Mad Men is definitely topping many lists as it has managed to create and maintain an impeccably accurate aesthetic and addictive plot for seven seasons. The evident amount of research, passion and execution of each set built for the different seasons is remarkable not only for its accuracy and attention to detail, but because it kept evolving as the years passed, reflecting on how characters and the world around them changed. To celebrate the show’s final season, InteriorDesign launched a photo collection of the last beautiful sets created by Matthew Weiner and his team.

GitHub Headquarters

TheeBlog-GitHub_Office It’s been a while since we feature cool office spaces, and with shows like Scandal or House of Cards, I figured GitHub’s San Francisco Headquarters would be the perfect office to feature. Why, you ask? Well, not only does this 55,000 square foot office come with pool tables, an amphitheater used for presentations and events or a restaurant-sized speakeasy liquor bar. It also features meeting rooms ‘themed’ like the ones at the White House, and perhaps the coolest reception lobby you will ever find. A full replica of the White House’s oval office. Yup, enough said.

Dropbox – San Francisco Offices

TheeBlog-DropboxOffices When it comes to great companies and products, I tend to be a very loyal costumer. And looking back at 2013, I noticed that there were a few products I not only recommended, but also used (a lot!) throughout different jobs or projects I was fortunate to be part of. One of these great companies is Dropbox. Sure, we all know how awesome they are, so we won’t talk about it. Instead, I want to share a photo-tour of their sweet new San Francisco offices co-created by Geremia Design and Boor Bridges Architecture, you know, to kick off the year and hopefully inspire agencies, companies and designers out there to re-think their creative environment and make it fun and inspiring this year.

New McCann Erickson’s NYC Headquarters

TheeBlog-McCannericksonNYC When it comes to beautiful architecture, lovely interiors and great taste, advertising agencies will always be at the top of the list (with a few exceptions, of course). And since we all enjoy checking out cool offices, today I want to share McCann Erickson’s new 5 floors, 130,000 sqft NYC headquarters, designed by Gensler and Tom Dixon/Design Research Studio. Check out the great space, furniture and sweet lighting after the jump.

Facebook Town

TheeBlog-FacebookTown It is no secret that Facebook might be one of the coolest companies to work for, and one with one of the coolest ‘campus’ around – How many companies can call their HQs a campus? Facebook is more than just a cool and pretty facade, from what I’ve learned from people I know who work there is that there’s this great inspiring vibe complimented with great vision and leadership. Add sweet offices to this mix and you have a $100 BILLION company. Give or take a couple of billions. Now, I know I’ve shared Facebook’s offices before (HERE) but today I want to share more than just their main building. I came across a great article featuring Facebook’s entire campus or mini-town composed of laundromats, bakeries, barber shops, restaurants, music studios, wood shops, banks, bike shops… which are all free and available to all employees. I know… I know…

Twitter’s San Francisco HQ

TheeBlog_TwitterHQ When it comes to cool headquarters and offices, startups and tech companies really do take the cake. Don’t know if it is the influx of young(er) blood and beliefs or simply the understanding that creating a well decorated and comfortable environment will always keep employees happy and production growing. Unfortunately, as simple and true as this equation is, there are still many offices and corporations who do little or nothing to improve their old or tacky in-house culture or decoration. Twitter is definitely one of the companies that share this ideology, and it is reflected in their sweet HQ offices located in San Francisco. Housed in a lovely 1937 Art Deco building, this HQ comes with great social areas, a couple of cool conference rooms, an impressive cafeteria, a rooftop social area and garden, a yoga studio, game rooms and more…

Inside the new NFL Headquarters

TheeBlog_NFLheadquarters0 Although I am not a huge ‘american’ football fan (I know… you have 30 seconds to boo me) the NFL has, and will forever have, a very special place in my heart since it was my first ‘Big’ client when I opened my own Advertising / Design studio back in 2006. Not only was it a great experience and client because they believed in us, but also because we learned – a lot, and enjoyed a few perks and benefits :) Since I know most of you are hardcore football fans, here’s one for you. Architecture studio Ted Moudis Associates recently completed the construction and decoration of the new NFL headquarters located in Manhattan. Tour the offices after the jump…

Target’s Grand Central dollhouse

TheeBlog-target_dollhouse Target’s constant (and consistent) cool ideas are always a great example of good, inspiring design and great execution. Today I want to share one of their latest gems. In order to promote a new home decor collection called Threshold, they unveiled a not-so-typical display inside one of New York’s most iconic landmarks. To celebrate the launch, Target decided to go beyond the usual “imaging how this would look…” sales pitch and built an open dollhouse inside New York’s Grand Central Terminal! fully decorated and set up to allow visitors to instantly purchase items being displayed… Big kudos to Deutsch Inc. for pulling this off.

Google Israel offices

TheeBlog-GoogleIsrael I’ve always been a passionate advocate of good architecture and well designed spaces. In fact, I cannot stress enough the importance of a clean, fun and inspiring workspace/office. This should be mandatory! Google is one of those giants that certainly understands the importance of a creative environment for its employees. We’ve seen many of their offices around the world and drooled over their awesome architecture and decoration. Today I want to share one of Google’s latest additions, their Tel Aviv headquarters. An 85,000 sq. ft. campus, designed by Camenzind Evolution, that occupies 8 floors and features an interesting combination of modern and rustic social areas, colorful lighting and of course, a signature Google slide.

Luxury Amazon Floating Hotels

TheeBlog-FloatingHotel One of the many treats of growing up in South America was vast variety of climates, regions and proximity to neighboring countries. To celebrate our middle school graduation, my class and I took a school trip deep into the Amazonas River and the beautiful Ecuadorian rain forest that surrounds it. It was an experience I will never forget – and strongly recommend it!. One of the coolest experiences from that trip was definitely our ‘floating hotel’. These hotels smoothly navigate through rivers, providing breath-taking views of nature and landscapes, and taking you places only boats or natives could get to. I recently found an article and was glad to learn that these hotels still exist, and are now ‘luxuring’ things up. M/V Aria and M/V Aqua are Peru’s first luxury floating hotels and are putting a spin on jungle vacations.

The famous Steve Jobs’ yacht

TheeBlog-SteveJobsYacht We all remember Steve Jobs as a humble and simple genius. Although he was one of the most powerful men in the Universe, he loved to stay below the radar and his iconic style – he practically trademarked the black turtle-neck+New Balance kicks look – was a constant reminder of it. But what very few people knew, until its announcement last year and its mention in his biography book, was that Jobs had been working closely with French designer Philippe Starck on a personal project he unfortunately never got to see finished. VENUS is Steve Jobs impressive yacht and it was unveiled last month in Holland. Forget all yachts and boats you’ve seen before, as this -like everything Jobs created- will raise the bar pretty high.

Where the Internet lives

TheeBlog-GoogleDataCenters We all know about the perks and benefits of being a Google employee, we’ve also seen many of their extremely cool offices playgrounds but what most of us have never seen, is what really makes Google the global powerhouse it is. Its Data Centers! And before you walk away thinking this is going to be some geeky post, remember we are talking about Google, so of course even its Data Centers will be fun and impressive. Think of them as a combination of different movie sets like Star Wars + Mission Impossible + Star Trek + a little more Star Wars and a flair of Dr. Evil’s layer. Of course, all in Google signature colors. Get ready to geek out!

Microsoft’s Vienna Headquarters

TheeBlog-MicrosoftVienna There seems to be a new trend among large corporations when it comes to decorating or building new headquarter offices. And this is a great thing! Companies like Google, Apple and Facebook have proved that it is not necessary to be or act like a ’suit’ to be successful, and their amazing non-corporate offices reinforce this theory. The concept behind these offices is to replace old corporate cubicles with open spaces, motivational posters with pool tables and video games, creating an inspirational playground for their employees. Microsoft has joined this movement and recently unveiled their new Vienna headquarters done by Austrian architects Innocad. Check out their new pad!

The coolest office you’ve never seen

TheeBlog-Inventionland When it comes to office decoration or architecture, few companies are willing to break ‘corporate rules’ and offer their team a fun place to interact. Companies like Facebook, Google and many more have raised the bar with unique and beautiful spaces we all envy. Now, we’ve featured a few inspiring offices before but I really think Inventionland’s Pittsburgh headquarters might take the cake for the most fun, inspiring, creative and crazy office I’ve seen so far. Their ‘office’ includes castles, tree-houses, a massive pirate battle ship, a cave/kitchen, trees, lakes, waterfalls… Should I go on? Check out this sweet office after the jump!

Grupo Gallegos Headquarters

TheeBlog-GrupoGallegos It’s been a while since we don’t cover - and envy - sweet work spaces but today’s post will definitely make up for it. Grupo Gallegos is a Huntington Beach based Advertising Agency with not only a great portfolio of work, but one of the coolest headquarters I’ve seen in a while! Their beach based office, an ex-movie theater, was designed by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects and includes numerous wings, beautiful colors, a basketball court! and did I mention it is steps away from the ocean? Tour it after the jump and share it with your boss… We all deserve creative and inspiring spaces like this!

By now, most of you know me well and know that I love to post and share work, places or stories I like or find inspiring. You may also remember I promised to post more food-related material after our interview with our cool friend Maria Argüello (Yelp’s Community Manager) HERE And today I not only keep my promise, I also bring you a sweet new spot I recently discovered (heard a lot of buzz ) which might soon become the coolest shack in town! Yardbird – Southern Table & Bar is Miami Beach’s newest gem, and could be easily described as a hybrid between a hip SOHO bar + Cracker Barrel. This southern style shack perfectly combines lovely branding, beautiful architecture/interiors & delicious food. What more can you ask for!

Peru’s moody new Stadium

TheeBlog-LimaStadium
Using a combination of innovative technologies and lighting layouts, the façade of the Peru National Football Stadium has been infused with a mixture of lights that allow the façade to act as a “mirror” of the crowd’s mood.In what is probably now the largest crowd controlled interactive lighting display in the world, the stadium is able to communicate the ebb and flow of excitement and disappointment to the surrounding city, thus becoming a watched spectacle in itself.
