Copa Basel 2015

TheeBlog_CopaBasel

If you are into art, sneakers, and soccer, you’re going to love this post! My cool friends at Kicks To The Pitch, in collaboration with a couple of sponsors including the MLS are hosting a great event this Sunday. The event, called Copa Basel combines art, soccer, sneakers, and a variety of cool things to do, drink and see. Unfortunately this year will be the first I miss Art Basel because I am out of town, but if you are in Miami, make sure you stop by! Thanks again for the invite Marcus and congrats on such a fun event!

ENTOURAGE. The Movie.

I’m going to be honest. I’m as excited as Drama after getting a casting call. The Entourage movie trailer is finally out and I had to share it. Oh, and for the record, it does not matter if the movie is great or if it sucks, I’ll be there. Bring on the Ari Gold-ness!

Art Basel Miami 2014

TheeBlog_ArtBaselMiami2014 As most of you know very well, every year – every December to be specific, Miami turns into a unique, extravagant, classy, and busy city full of art fairs, shows, music, inspiration, and great food. This year, like every other year, my mission was to visit as many art fairs, galleries and shows as possible (it is extremely hard) as well as catching up with a couple of friends that visit Miami to work on their awesome projects. Now, I know it’s been some time since Art Basel 2014, but I promised I would share photos and here I am to deliver (had to go through hundreds), and to give you, who could not be in Miami, a little glimpse of what you can experience and enjoy for one entire week.

Latest Project: Miami MLS Team

TheeBlog-DiegoGuevara-MiamiFC It’s been seven months since David Beckham announced his intention to bring an MLS team to Miami, and even though I’ve never trusted Miami politicians, I was excited because I love the game and would love to get my kids involved in it as I was since a very early age. So, I ignored the “Don’t trust Gimenez” banners – which proved to be accurate – and watched the press conference, joined my local official supporters group and shared the news with friends. Fast forward a few months and we are still in limbo. We have no stadium location (mostly because Beckham is funding this project privately, which means no commissions for local politicians and contractors), we don’t have a team name or even an identity. Needless to say, every other MLS team and city in the US is laughing at us. Now, for a couple of months I’ve been thinking about this issue and the possibility of taking action and doing my part to spread the word and at least get the ball rolling on this subject. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able due to my busy schedule, until now. Last week I had to travel to Chicago for a couple of days, so I realized it was the perfect excuse to disconnect from work, and use a couple of free hours to develop my ideas and build a Miami Team (if you check towards the end, you’ll see real photos of work taking place mid-flight). I challenged myself to develop a complete branding case study in less than a week, and here are the results…

MIA Sessions x Joshua Davis

As you probably already know by now, a couple of good friends and I launched MIA Sessions, a local organization created to promote and support Miami’s creative community (HERE). As part of our goal, we’ve been working with huge names in various fields like Design, Digital Art, Fashion, Music, etc. and producing inspiring, casual, and fun interviews. Today I am excited to share our latest one, featuring the one and only, Joshua Davis! We had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Joshua, and I was able to to ask him a few questions about his work, the real story behind open source, his playlists and his take on Miami. Enjoy!

MIAMI x UBER

TheeBlog-UberMiami It’s been a long, rocky road. But after all the petitions, campaigns and efforts from all of us since last year (HERE), Miami has joined the 21st century as UBER has finally arrived. And although we only get UberX for now, this is a huge step in the right direction. This is great news Miami! If you haven’t experienced Uber yet, I strongly recommend you give it a try (that’s all it takes). To celebrate its arrival, Uber is offering free rides around Miami until June 20th, so experience for yourself what all the buzz is about. Oh! and if you can’t make it before June 20th, here’s a code for $10 off your first UBER ride pt4s8.

The STOLEN SOFAS Project

TheeBlog-StolenSofas If there’s something that I honestly enjoy as much as a well designed and consistent brand, is the vision and dedication to get involved, support, and be part of a community. And this is exactly what the great folks at Stolen Rum are doing. Not only is their product great and beautifully designed (you had me at lettering and type) but it’s also very active. One of their latest projects, Stolen Sofas, took place last week in three different cities around the world, including Miami, and it was not only a brilliant simple idea, but also a great way to introduce Stolen Rum to a new market. I was not able to attend the event, but my awesome Stolen friend Eunique was kind enough to share some photos and video. Thank you again E! and we’re looking forward to many more fun events and projects!

Locos Por Juana or Juanes

TheeBlog-LocosPorJuana_Juanes So, the other day, while shopping at Target, I strolled through the electronics department and heard a familiar song on the display TVs that made me stop and go back to make sure it was the song I thought I knew. It wasn’t. It was a very, very, very close one. In fact, it even shared the same title, and what got me… the same look. Most of you know the work/logo I designed for my good friends Locos Por Juana, and the close tie and love I got for this killer band. So, when I realized that the song that I thought was theirs, was in fact, a new global single by a more ‘commercial’ artist like Juanes, I wanted to share my view on it, because I feel it somehow relates to what us Designers have to deal with often. Again, this is my take on it, and don’t hate me if you are a Juanes fan. I’m just saying…

Draplin x Miami

TheeBlog-MIAsessions_DraplinMiami Don’t forget to cancel plans and join us tomorrow for a night of Design, inspiration, lots of cursing and… Draplin. Aaron Draplin’s “Tall Tales of a Large Man” tour hits Miami and if you are in the creative field, this lecture is a must. BUT that’s not all, we’ll be spending some off-time with Aaron around town, and will get some juicy stories, footage and interviews for MIA Sessions. If you are not following us yet, do so and stay tuned. Some cool stuff coming soon…

INSA + Wade – Animated Mural

Art Basel Miami is over. And this year, the amount of amazing artists and inspiring work around the city was one for the books. Among the numerous new murals that went up in Wynwood, there was one, an animated one, that got some love and attention. On the heels of a successful US sneaker launch, Dwyane Wade and Li-Ning unveiled a mural created by renown gif-fiti artist, INSA during Miami during Art Basel. The 20’ x 30’ mural is located in Wynwood and features the brand tagline “Make Your Own Way.” The piece was released as an animated gif. Check out some process photos and video…

MIA Sessions

Those of you who know me well or that have come to know me through this blog know that I love what I do and that I am always trying to do my part to share inspiration and the beauty of creativity. I am a huge advocate of working on what you love, sharing / collaborating with others, and never settling or getting too comfortable. Unfortunately, when it comes to cultivating creativity or building a strong -and involved- creative community, Miami has fallen a bit short, which is terribly sad considering all the amazing jewels this city has to offer and the amount of amazingly creative people who live here. This is why, a couple of very good and talented friends and I decided to work together to change this scenario, to do our part. Today, I am stoked to introduce you to our new baby, a project we’ve been planning and working on for quite some time and that is finally ready to be shared and to help Miami be the place we all want it to be when it comes to inspiration and creativity. Meet MIA Sessions!

The Reel Miami Project – Wynwood

TheeBlog-FroRojas_Wynwood In order to promote how awesome Miami is, The Reel Miami Project partnered with a few of Miami’s most talented Directors to produce six short films featuring different neighborhoods of Miami. My good friend and very talented Director Fro Rojas collaborated with this project and crafted a great short film featuring Wynwood. Today I want to share his lovely trailer, which was just released this week and that will be making its rounds around the city very soon. Classy work my friend! Check out this and the rest of trailers by checking The Reel Miami Project’s site…

LeBron James – Training Day

We’re finally only a day away from the 2013-2014 season kick off! Just last week, a friend and I were talking about how quiet this break has been for Wade, LeBron and company. Yes, they have been doing their thing and enjoying some well deserved time off, but we barely saw any new commercials… until today. With the new season about to start, Nike released its latest ad spot called Training Day featuring LeBron and a few hundred Miamians who accompany him throughout his off-season workout routine including some swimming, cycling and running. Check out the cool spot – Oh, and a shot-out to my friend Lee who makes his appearance at the 1:17 mark (or yellow tank on the screenshot above).

Q&A Session: The Fashion Poet

TheeBlog-TheFashionPoet When we talk about Miami, most people immediately associate it with beautiful beaches, hot women, warm (or scorching) weather, food and nightlife. But there is so much more to Miami that most visitors, and even locals don’t know. We are an eclectic melting pot where creative, passionate dreamers and doers share ideas and collaborate on a daily basis. A hub for all things creative, inspired by the vast amount of mixing cultures and backgrounds. Today, I want to share a fun Q&A I had with my friend Annie Vasquez, who I can honestly say exemplifies perfectly all these Miami attributes and might be one of the hardest working women in Miami when it comes to Fashion. If you are from Miami, I am sure you know her or have met her, and if you are not, get to know her through this interview where we talk about Fashion, Miami and her new film, screening this weekend at the Miami Fashion Film Festival…

Yes, it was an intense Playoff season, and although we struggled a little, we’re on top of the world again! TheeBlog-CaribbeanVacartion As much as we love what we do, it is also good and healthy to disconnect every now and then to take a vacation and clear up, recharge and of course, get inspired. There won’t be any posts this coming week but I promise there will be some interesting things coming up soon (and photos!). But for now, I am off to discover Turks and Caicos, St. Thomas, St. John the beautiful Virgin Islands and Enjoy the Caribbean!

LeBron X MVP

TheeBlog-Nike_X_MVP As a proud Miami native and Miami Heat fan, I am confident we’ll win another Championship this year – regardless of that ugly and rusty loss against the Bulls last night. Sorry Heat haters, but you know it is inevitable. Last night, LeBron James accepted his 4th MVP award in front of his home crowd, becoming part of a select group of athletes that have been able to achieve this impressive status and part of Basketball’s history. Yes, we witnessed history! If you watched the game, you might have noticed LeBron’s colorful shoes during the ceremony and first quarter. My son did. So, after the expected… “Oh man! I want those!!!” I did some homework and figured I would share with you also. Nike celebrated LeBron’s achievement by creating these special edition LeBron X MVP shoes, combining colors and patterns from each one of LeBron’s X series shoes since 2012.

Recent Work: Poetry Month at The Betsy

TheeBlog-DiegoGuevara-Betsy I’ve always shared my passion and love for anything that challenges or inspires me. Today I want to share a cool new project/collaboration I was recently part of and that will be launching next week. My great friends at The Betsy Hotel are hosting O, Miami as part of the National Poetry Month and invited me to be part of an exhibition called Manuscripts: The Illuminated Broadsides. This exhibition celebrates poetry by featuring 26 poems by local poets, interpreted by 13 Graphic Designers. I was delighted to be part of this project and collaborated with 2 pieces that I wanted to share with you today in case you can’t make it to the exhibition at the Hotel.

MIA to LA

TheeBlog_LosAngeles It’s been a little slow here lately and I promised I would explain it all. By the way, thank you for your emails and for checking in, it really means a lot to know that you guys enjoy this blog and that it has become part of your daily life :) So, here’s the deal… 2013 started with a bang for me as an unexpected and great challenge that would change my life knocked on my door. After much consideration, conversations with my family, research and the love and invaluable support of my amazing wife, we decided to take on this challenge and head over to the West Coast – Los Angeles. Yes, I am sad to leave Miami, specially my great family! :( but, I am also excited and looking forward to a new adventure and being part of an amazing company that I’ve always been a fan of, and that has not only made everything easy for my family but also made me feel like I’m part of their family already :) But don’t worry, things will continue to run smoothly here as I slowly make the transition and settle before the summer… Thanks to everyone that has been supportive and continuosly checking up, I promise bigger and better things are coming!

Art Basel Special: Behind the Scenes – OBEY

TheeBlog-OBEY_ArtBasel It’s been a slow week and I apologize for it. But! to make it up, today I bring a post that a lot of you will enjoy. As we all prepare for Art Basel down here in Miami, I’ve been busy roaming around Miami Beach and Wynwood trying to catch all the amazing artists that are down here and currently working. You see, to be completely honest, I think I enjoy these pre-Basel weeks a lot more than the actual event as I get the chance to walk around and meet most artists as they prepare and finish their masterpieces. And this year, I had the chance and pleasure to meet an artist I’ve been following for many years and whose work I enjoy, support, and that has become an intricate part of Basel Miami. Shepard Fairey, also knows as OBEY by most, has been in Miami for the past couple of days, working on new stunning murals and generating commotion amongst Miami art lovers. I visited him and his awesome crew and took some photos of the process and work behind their lovely murals. Check them!

Miami Heat Intro 12/13

TheeBlog-MiamiHeat_IntroLBJ I was recently at a Miami Heat game with my son and got to enjoy some of the awesome arena food (try the chili fries), overpriced drinks, Heat dancers of course, and one specific treat I look forward to every year. The Heat Intro Video. Don’t know if it’s because I’m a visual guy always looking for good work and inspiration or because I am an excited fan, but these videos always hit the spot for me. It gets me pumped! (It also helps to have a badass Championship team) The new intro, directed by Miami’s own Gil Green dropped last year’s Kanye+neon style and went simpler, badder and in your face, featuring great shots of the team working out, showing off skills and reminding other teams we’re going for that third ring! All this, accompanied by lovely effects, a cool alley set, strobes! and a great track by The White Stripes (Seven Nation Army) which will make you feel you can jump to the court and kick some ass. Check out the video after the jump, I’m sure it’ll get you ready for the weekend…

My Daft Punk experiment

TheeBlog-DaftPunkHalloween Considering Halloween is only a day away and the fact that I like to share and post personal projects I enjoy, today I want to show you the process behind my last (yes, I know a bit old but this year I didn’t have any time) Halloween costume/project. I’ve been a huge fan of Daft Punk for many years and I’ve always wanted my own Thomas Bangalter or Guy-Manuel so Halloween seemed like the right excuse to spend numerous hours working and making my own. For this project I had to recruit some help (my awesome and crafty brother) and had to experiment with a few materials. The result, a fully custom Thomas helmet featuring programmable LEDs and a bunch of high fives at parties :)
