New Work: The Branding of Puerto Rico FC

TheeBlog_DiegoGuevara_PuertoRicoFC Whoa! It’s been a long time since my last ‘work’ post (HERE), which luckily is not always a bad thing as it either means it’s been really busy or that my days simply don’t have enough hours. So, to make it up, today I want to share a new project I’ve been working on for a couple of weeks, and that at the risk of sounding like a bad parent choosing between kids, might be my favorite, not only because of its über cool factor, but also because of how it happened, what it represents not only to me as a Designer and soccer/football lover but also to a beautiful island and its energetic, proud and supportive people. Oh, and of course, because I got to meet and work with an amazing client and group of people I can now call friends :) Today I want to share the process behind the design and branding of Carmelo Anthony’s (yup, that NBA Carmelo) Puerto Rico official NASL soccer team, Puerto Rico FC.

Art Basel Miami 2014

TheeBlog_ArtBaselMiami2014 As most of you know very well, every year – every December to be specific, Miami turns into a unique, extravagant, classy, and busy city full of art fairs, shows, music, inspiration, and great food. This year, like every other year, my mission was to visit as many art fairs, galleries and shows as possible (it is extremely hard) as well as catching up with a couple of friends that visit Miami to work on their awesome projects. Now, I know it’s been some time since Art Basel 2014, but I promised I would share photos and here I am to deliver (had to go through hundreds), and to give you, who could not be in Miami, a little glimpse of what you can experience and enjoy for one entire week.

Latest Project: Miami MLS Team

TheeBlog-DiegoGuevara-MiamiFC It’s been seven months since David Beckham announced his intention to bring an MLS team to Miami, and even though I’ve never trusted Miami politicians, I was excited because I love the game and would love to get my kids involved in it as I was since a very early age. So, I ignored the “Don’t trust Gimenez” banners – which proved to be accurate – and watched the press conference, joined my local official supporters group and shared the news with friends. Fast forward a few months and we are still in limbo. We have no stadium location (mostly because Beckham is funding this project privately, which means no commissions for local politicians and contractors), we don’t have a team name or even an identity. Needless to say, every other MLS team and city in the US is laughing at us. Now, for a couple of months I’ve been thinking about this issue and the possibility of taking action and doing my part to spread the word and at least get the ball rolling on this subject. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able due to my busy schedule, until now. Last week I had to travel to Chicago for a couple of days, so I realized it was the perfect excuse to disconnect from work, and use a couple of free hours to develop my ideas and build a Miami Team (if you check towards the end, you’ll see real photos of work taking place mid-flight). I challenged myself to develop a complete branding case study in less than a week, and here are the results…

Chicago Bound!

TheeBlog-Chicago_Bean As most of you probably know already from my latest interview with Armin Vit (HERE), I am on my way to Chicago for this year’s Brand New Conference (hope to meet some of you there!) , so there won’t be any posts this week :( But it’s not all sad news. Make sure to check Twitter, Facebook and Instagram as I will be sharing photos, behind the scenes, and talks by some amazingly talented speakers I can’t wait to meet. See you on ‘the social media’.

MIA Sessions x Joshua Davis

As you probably already know by now, a couple of good friends and I launched MIA Sessions, a local organization created to promote and support Miami’s creative community (HERE). As part of our goal, we’ve been working with huge names in various fields like Design, Digital Art, Fashion, Music, etc. and producing inspiring, casual, and fun interviews. Today I am excited to share our latest one, featuring the one and only, Joshua Davis! We had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Joshua, and I was able to to ask him a few questions about his work, the real story behind open source, his playlists and his take on Miami. Enjoy!

Locos Por Juana or Juanes

TheeBlog-LocosPorJuana_Juanes So, the other day, while shopping at Target, I strolled through the electronics department and heard a familiar song on the display TVs that made me stop and go back to make sure it was the song I thought I knew. It wasn’t. It was a very, very, very close one. In fact, it even shared the same title, and what got me… the same look. Most of you know the work/logo I designed for my good friends Locos Por Juana, and the close tie and love I got for this killer band. So, when I realized that the song that I thought was theirs, was in fact, a new global single by a more ‘commercial’ artist like Juanes, I wanted to share my view on it, because I feel it somehow relates to what us Designers have to deal with often. Again, this is my take on it, and don’t hate me if you are a Juanes fan. I’m just saying…

Recent Work: EL REY Network

TheeBlog-DiegoGuevara_ElRey_ID It’s been a while since I share some personal work, and since January is all about resolutions, goals and new starts, I figured it would be a good idea to share a great project I had the pleasure and fortune of working on recently… It all started with a phone call, you know, the ones that simply happen when you least expect it and that in a matter of seconds not only capture your complete attention, but also manage to get your creativity going crazy. Well, I recently received one of those phone calls asking me if I would be interested in working on a secret cool project for a very well known Hollywood client. After a couple of details and without thinking twice, I immediately accepted and began sketching ideas. The challenge: Hollywood Director Robert Rodriguez and his newest and ambitious television project, EL REY Network.

Typism Book Feature!

TheeBlog-TypismBook1 You all know very well how much I love letters, Type and Lettering, and how I am constantly learning new techniques, trying to incorporate it into my work, and sharing this beautiful craft and passion with my students. Now, remember I mentioned a type book I was invited to be part of, and that was in the works?… Well, my contributor copy finally arrived and I am BEYOND static, humbled, honored, and proud to show you this amazing book, and my featured work :) To be part of such a great international publication, and to share this honor – and pages – with über talented artists I admire and study so much like Andrei Robu, Mathew Tapia, Simon Ålander, James T. Edmondson, Sergey Shapiro, Michael Spitz, Dominique Falla, Joel Felix, Jomn Contino, John Passafiume, Ged Palmer, and so many more is definitely a career highlight! A huge thank you to Dominique Falla for inviting me to be part of this project and making my year. What a perfect way to end the year in a positive vibe, being featured in an amazing book and being able to show, and leave my kids a little published piece of my work that they can enjoy and maybe show their kids someday :)

Bipolar Tee + Cotton Bureau

TheeBlog-BipolarTshirt_CottonBureau Last year I launched a t-shirt project and debuted the Bipolar Tee (HERE) As most of you probably already know, the demand for this shirt surpassed any goals or plans (completely sold out!) and received a lot of love globally, as we received orders from all continents – including countries like Japan, South Africa, Brazil, Australia, Germany and many more. Today I want to share some exciting news, specially for those of you who are still after one of these babies. The Bipolar Tee is available again thanks to the awesome folks at Cotton Bureau. There’s only one catch, the shirt needs at least 25 orders in order to go to production (and we only have 12 days left!). Typism Book!!

TheeBlog-TypismBook Today I want to share some awesome news coming from Australia. Last month, Typism, an international Type conference, took place in Australia and it featured many amazingly talented and inspiring Designers and Type Masters like Dominique Falla (its creator), Gemma OBrien, Matt Vergotis, Nicole Phillips, Wayne Thompson, Aurelie Maron and Bobby Haiqalsyah.. Being the Type geek I am, I loved the idea and learned about the event earlier this year. Now, although I couldn’t make it to Gold Coast to be part of this inspiring conference, my work did :) Back in May, Dominique contacted me and invited me to be part of the Typism book she was building in conjunction with the conference. The idea of the book was to gather Designers and Type Lovers from all over the world like Jon Contino, Simon Alander, Sergey Shapiro, Jackson Alves, and put them together in a cool new Typebook… YES!

Brand New Conference 2013!

TheeBlog-BrandNewConference2013 Last week, I was very fortunate to visit New York City and attend, once again, my favorite branding and design event, the 2013 edition of Brand New Conference, organized by my good friends and extremely talented, hard working power-couple, Bryony and Armin (UnderConsideration). Although this was my fourth consecutive year attending this conference, (ahem, Armin) I must say that it felt as fun and refreshing as the first one, as it was full of inspiration and delivered a unique combination of talented attendees, stunning branding and design presentations, lots of learning, humor and great camaraderie. And of course, an impressive list of speakers including Stuart Watson (venturethree), Jason Klein & Casey White (Brandiose), Josh Higgis (Obama 2012 Campaign), my buddy Debbie Millman!, the iconic Bob Gill, Bruno Maag (Dalton Maag), Matt Stevens and of course, Michael Bierut. How could you not learn and be inspired with such a lineup? As it has become tradition with these post-event write-ups, I wanted to share some of the conference’s most memorable moments and some of my personal inspiration and learning takeaways, accompanied by some photos I was able to capture…

Yes, it was an intense Playoff season, and although we struggled a little, we’re on top of the world again! Let’s talk Apple and iOS7

TheeBlog-Apple_ios7 So, by now, I am pretty sure you are aware of Apple’s latest releases and announcements. Yes, reactions to these have been… let’s say eclectic – or colorful (seems a little more appropriate). Today I want to briefly talk about the re-design of iOS7. One, because I know you guys are probably also struggling with this issue and two, because I needed to rant. I’ve been a loyal Apple supporter for years and was curious to see if the rumors about Ive’s new flat experience were true, I mean, as a Designer, this was something I was looking forward to. But what I saw at WWDC simply didn’t feel right… (and I am being gentle)

But for now, I am off to discover Turks and Caicos, St. Thomas, St. John the beautiful Virgin Islands and Enjoy the Caribbean!

Recent Work: Poetry Month at The Betsy

TheeBlog-DiegoGuevara-Betsy I’ve always shared my passion and love for anything that challenges or inspires me. Today I want to share a cool new project/collaboration I was recently part of and that will be launching next week. My great friends at The Betsy Hotel are hosting O, Miami as part of the National Poetry Month and invited me to be part of an exhibition called Manuscripts: The Illuminated Broadsides. This exhibition celebrates poetry by featuring 26 poems by local poets, interpreted by 13 Graphic Designers. I was delighted to be part of this project and collaborated with 2 pieces that I wanted to share with you today in case you can’t make it to the exhibition at the Hotel.

MIA to LA

TheeBlog_LosAngeles It’s been a little slow here lately and I promised I would explain it all. By the way, thank you for your emails and for checking in, it really means a lot to know that you guys enjoy this blog and that it has become part of your daily life :) So, here’s the deal… 2013 started with a bang for me as an unexpected and great challenge that would change my life knocked on my door. After much consideration, conversations with my family, research and the love and invaluable support of my amazing wife, we decided to take on this challenge and head over to the West Coast – Los Angeles. Yes, I am sad to leave Miami, specially my great family! :( but, I am also excited and looking forward to a new adventure and being part of an amazing company that I’ve always been a fan of, and that has not only made everything easy for my family but also made me feel like I’m part of their family already :) But don’t worry, things will continue to run smoothly here as I slowly make the transition and settle before the summer… Thanks to everyone that has been supportive and continuosly checking up, I promise bigger and better things are coming!

The new American Airlines

TheeBlog-AmericanAirlines With so many tasteless and unsuccessful rebrands lately, I must admit I was a bit anxious yesterday when I read about American Airlines releasing a new look “very soon”. Not because I am a fan or a frequent AA flyer (I try to avoid it like I do Lindsay Lohan) but because deep down I knew this would not be good. You see, there’s this inexplicable obsession with shinny-3D bullshit going around, and unfortunately, it is devouring what’s left of those great iconic and legendary logos many generations grew up with. The new look features a new “evolved” icon more fitted for a small private jet company, and a few changes including new gradients, and as-american-as-you-can-get aircraft graphics.
