The Creative Spark: James White

If you are like me and follow all your favorite Designers on different social platforms, you’ll enjoy this great new video by Lynda. I’ve always been fascinated by the amazingly cool work of James White or Signalnoise if you prefer to call him that. Not only is James an extremely talented artist, but also an über cool and humble guy who I recently had the pleasure of meeting and are in the process of planning some cool stuff for 2014! (Stay tuned for some exciting upcoming news!) – Designer James White spent a decade working for other agencies before he founded Signalnoise, a one-man design studio in Nova Scotia. He was determined to explore his own aesthetic: “Fascination, wonder, and imagination made visual.”

Recent Work: Poetry Month at The Betsy

TheeBlog-DiegoGuevara-Betsy I’ve always shared my passion and love for anything that challenges or inspires me. Today I want to share a cool new project/collaboration I was recently part of and that will be launching next week. My great friends at The Betsy Hotel are hosting O, Miami as part of the National Poetry Month and invited me to be part of an exhibition called Manuscripts: The Illuminated Broadsides. This exhibition celebrates poetry by featuring 26 poems by local poets, interpreted by 13 Graphic Designers. I was delighted to be part of this project and collaborated with 2 pieces that I wanted to share with you today in case you can’t make it to the exhibition at the Hotel.

Good Day CA. Again.

TheeBlog-GoodDayCA Since I am, and will be in LA for the rest of the week, I wanted to share again a beautiful project I shared a while back but that came to mind as I drove past great signs and Design around town. So, without further ado, enjoy these fantastic posters… When was your last road trip? Whether it is with friends or family, we all enjoy the freedom, sense of adventure and discovery road trips provide. So, what could make a road trip even better? Map portraits by Ed Fairburn

TheeBlog-EdFairburn Let’s be honest, when was the last time you checked a map? An not the one on your phone, but a real map? Chances are, you haven’t done this in a while, unless you are a tourist or a wife/girlfriend fixed on making a point and showing your better half how lost he is. But it’s not all bad news for old printed maps, Cardiff based artist Ed Fairburn’s beautiful map-portraits bring old maps and their intricate beauty back to life as a unique canvas for Ed’s stunning work.

Creative Catharsis by Sharp Suits

TheeBlog-SharpSuits I believe the saying goes, “Common sense is the least common of all senses”, and unfortunately, this is very true. I know many retail and customer service professionals deal with mind-boggling requests, arguments and comments regularly but we ‘creatives’ also get our fair share of WTF? gems almost on a daily basis. Oh, and there is no discrimination… these gems could come from your sales team, ‘marketing gurus’, account executives, and of course…. clients. To celebrate? these frustrating gems, Sharp Suits launched a great collaborative exhibition called A Creative Catharsis featuring a collection of posters created by Ireland Designers. Check out some of these great and oh so real posters after the jump…

Right on Target!

TheeBlog-AllanPeters It never fails. Whenever I meet somebody and explain what I do, or sit down to chat with a client, conversations always end up on samples of what they like and what companies they think are doing a great job when it comes to branding and advertising. I love listening to “consumers” talk about the brands they identify with and most importantly, WHY. Among the many companies always mentioned are, of course, Apple because of its iconic ‘clean and modern’ style and Target for its also iconic “imagery, style and their fun ads!” And I agree. I visit my local Target store at least twice a week, this is where we buy our groceries, school supplies and way too many toys; and to be honest, thanks to their constantly updated graphics and lovely overall design experience, I actually enjoy grocery shopping and walking through toy aisles. Over and over. Today I want to publicly congratulate Target for their amazing work and share the work of one of their in-house talents, responsible for some of their much deserved success. Check out the work of Allan Peters

The beautiful work of Pascal Blanchet

TheeBlog-PascalBlanchet It is no secret that I love everything vintage. In fact, I still have not met anyone who doesn’t enjoy the beauty of ‘old’ work ranging from signs and posters to furniture. There’s something special about vintage Illustrations and posters. Perhaps it is that nostalgic feeling or the beauty of simplicity that captivates us, but when simple lines and lovely colors combine seamlessly, it becomes virtually impossible to not stare… or drool. Pascal Blanchet is a talented Québec based Illustrator with a beautiful collection of work that can be described as modern-vintage. His dexterity to combine vintage style illustration and colors with modern elements and stories is simply perfect!

Quotes of Motivation

TheeBlog-QuotesofMotivation

Decorating an office or working space should be relatively easy and effortless if you have some basic design principles and good taste. Unfortunately, many offices out there seem to have stayed frozen in time (and not in a good ‘Mad Men’ way) or even worse, still believe in those obscenely tacky motivational posters usually found on low budget made-for-TV office sets. So, if you’re planning an office makeover or simply want to add more decor with a punch to your wall, here are some posters that might do the job. They are simple, effective and to the point. So simple you could have them done professionally at banner and flyer printing shops. Quotes of Motivation is a project by Doodlicious, a collection of words, reminding you that you should be working and not procrastinating.

As a ‘vintage’ geek, I have to say I’ve been in love with Jon’s work since I first saw it a year ago and his admirable type and lettering skills have always been an inspiration. Check out some of his work after the jump!

Polygon Heroes

TheeBlog-PolygonHeroes Remember those boring and painful lessons about polygons and Geometry classes back in school? I don’t. Not sure if it is because I hated them and never paid any attention -or because I was ‘absent’ that day. Luckily, I learned to love them and now I spend days creating mock-ups and using them almost on a daily basis. Why am I talking about Polygons you might ask? Because today I want to share a series of brilliant posters created by James Reid utilizing polygons to recreate some of our most iconic super heroes. Check the series after the jump!

The lovely work of Dan Cassaro

TheeBlog-DanCassaroI had a conversation recently about the growing popularity of ‘old school’ techniques such as letterpress, handwriting and vintage style posters. And for a moment, it became a bit hard to explain why as designers, we love and appreciate the labor, dedication and talent involved in each one of the pieces we see daily on dribbble, behance, etc. Similar to explaining somebody at the mall the beauty and value of couture or vintage fashion. So, I figured showing samples of beautiful work and talent would make things a lot easier. And what better example than the work of Brooklyn based Designer and Illustrator Dan Cassaro. Check out his work after the jump!
