As you probably already know by now, a couple of good friends and I launched MIA Sessions, a local organization created to promote and support Miami’s creative community (HERE). As part of our goal, we’ve been working with huge names in various fields like Design, Digital Art, Fashion, Music, etc. and producing inspiring, casual, and fun interviews. Today I am excited to share our latest one, featuring the one and only, Joshua Davis! We had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Joshua, and I was able to to ask him a few questions about his work, the real story behind open source, his playlists and his take on Miami. Enjoy!
EUROPE IN 8 BITS is a documentary that explores the world of chip music, a new musical trend that is growing exponentially throughout Europe. The stars of this musical movement reveal to us how to reuse old videogames hardware like Nintendo’s GameBoy, NES, Atari ST, Amiga and the Commodore 64 to turn them into a tool capable of creating a new sound, a modern tempo and an innovative musical style. This is a new way of interpreting music performed by a great many artists who show their skills in turning these “limited” machines designed for leisure in the 80’s into surprising musical instruments and graphical tools. It will leave nobody indifferent.
I love it when great brands collaborate. Nest recently teamed up with Virgin America to reinvent the way people fly, providing a unique and customizable experience. Tony Fadell and Richard Branson introduce Total Temperature Control, the newest product from Nest, available in all Virgin America planes.
While everyone is still wondering how Google Glass works or who has been able to get a pair in order to experience them, Google has been busy working on its new toy. A new watch that promises to make all things look and work better, and beat all other smart watches like Samsung or Motorola. Android Wear is Google’s new baby, and its interface, released last week, is nice, simple and effective. Check out some samples and a video after the jump.
The World Cup is only 83 days away!!! And if you are like me, you’re already looking for extra DVR storage alternatives, planning out your sports bar itinerary and times and letting everyone know that you will be busy and disconnected for a month. One thing I do hate during the tournament is asking every restaurant or bar to switch replays of college golf tournament broadcasts to live World Cup games – it happens. But hey! Now there’s a solution for that! The geniuses at beIN Sports developed a vuvuzela with the ability to flip any channel, to their station, giving us football fans the power (at least for one happy month)!
It’s been a while since we feature cool office spaces, and with shows like Scandal or House of Cards, I figured GitHub’s San Francisco Headquarters would be the perfect office to feature. Why, you ask? Well, not only does this 55,000 square foot office come with pool tables, an amphitheater used for presentations and events or a restaurant-sized speakeasy liquor bar. It also features meeting rooms ‘themed’ like the ones at the White House, and perhaps the coolest reception lobby you will ever find. A full replica of the White House’s oval office. Yup, enough said.
Yes, I know I’m a little late to the celebration and messages, but this great video, shot entirely on a iPhones, pretty much sums up Apple’s presence and importance in our everyday life. And this is something we all should celebrate – yes, even you Apple haters. Here’s to many, many more, Apple. Thank you for changing the world.
When it comes to cool headquarters and offices, startups and tech companies really do take the cake. Don’t know if it is the influx of young(er) blood and beliefs or simply the understanding that creating a well decorated and comfortable environment will always keep employees happy and production growing. Unfortunately, as simple and true as this equation is, there are still many offices and corporations who do little or nothing to improve their old or tacky in-house culture or decoration. Twitter is definitely one of the companies that share this ideology, and it is reflected in their sweet HQ offices located in San Francisco. Housed in a lovely 1937 Art Deco building, this HQ comes with great social areas, a couple of cool conference rooms, an impressive cafeteria, a rooftop social area and garden, a yoga studio, game rooms and more…
“Box” explores the synthesis of real and digital space through projection-mapping on moving surfaces. The short film documents a live performance, captured entirely in camera. Bot & Dolly produced this work to serve as both an artistic statement and technical demonstration. It is the culmination of multiple technologies, including large scale robotics, projection mapping, and software engineering. This methodology has tremendous potential to radically transform theatrical presentations, and define new genres of expression. – Agree!
As many of you might know by now, the Steve Jobs biopic, featuring Ashton Kutcher as Jobs, is scheduled to hit theaters this month (August 16th) and although the hype – or feedback- has not been that great, I am sure most of us will be there. I know I will. Whether Kutcher can pull this one of has generated mixed feelings, but I guess we’ll have to wait for the movie release for a verdict. For now, here’s the official movie trailer and some photos to get you in the mood. Happy Friday!
So, by now, I am pretty sure you are aware of Apple’s latest releases and announcements. Yes, reactions to these have been… let’s say eclectic – or colorful (seems a little more appropriate). Today I want to briefly talk about the re-design of iOS7. One, because I know you guys are probably also struggling with this issue and two, because I needed to rant. I’ve been a loyal Apple supporter for years and was curious to see if the rumors about Ive’s new flat experience were true, I mean, as a Designer, this was something I was looking forward to. But what I saw at WWDC simply didn’t feel right… (and I am being gentle)
There’s been an exciting surge of exciting and amazingly inspiring “title work” lately – and a high email based demand for more! Masters like Dany Yount, Nando Costa, Ash Thorp and many more have delighted us with beautiful mini-films and title sequences that go well beyond the expected, inspiring many of us and raising the bar a little higher each time. It is no surprise that OFFF has always been a mecca for inspiration and learning, and that its titles have always been simply perfect. Today, I want to share the recently released titles for this year’s OFFF Barcelona conference, created by the geniuses at From Form in collaboration with Part of Something. The stunning film features a lovely story and all speakers in a way that I’ve never seen before, and that I am completely in love with! Simply BRILLIANT! This is your must watch of the week!
Remember Wedding Crashers and that great bromance/chemistry between Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn? Well, they’re back, but not for a sequel (yet). The Internship is a new movie starring Wilson and Vaughn as ex-salesmen who lose their jobs and somehow end up as Google interns. Could this be the future of movies? A feature, extremely expensive (and profitable) product commercial?
Like many of you, I really don’t like Internet Explorer. It’s cumbersome, unreliable and worst of all, forces us to work extra/harder. But now that Microsoft has decided to
copy Apple ‘evolve’, new promo spots and advertising has been popping up everywhere. And to my surprise, the spot I want to share today is actually good! (Considering most of their print ads are blatant copies of Apple and iPad ads). This new ad spot wants to re-introduce us to the new and ‘grown-up’ Internet Explorer by taking us back in time to the 90s - this ad might not make much sense if you were born in the 2000s – and featuring items, toys, technology and shoes (Pumps & LA Lights!!!) we grew up with.
Ahhh the good ol’ days…
Animated films have gained a respectable, and well deserved, spot when it comes to movie genres. Every year more and more films are released and continue to improve their audience reach with great stories, impressive animations, effects and a couple of good ‘adult’ jokes hidden in the plot. I’ve been a fan of them since I first watched Toy Story and now that I have kids, I get to enjoy them again (sometimes 70 times a week) SHAVE IT! Is a beautiful new independent short film by Argentina based studio 3dar. It’s the story of a monkey, who accidentally discovers an electric shaver, changes his appearance, moves to the big city and becomes President. I don’t know about you but that plot makes me want to watch it immediately, and once you get to the colors and illustrations, you’re hypnotized by its awesomeness!! Check out a trailer and some of the ‘making of’ sketches and storyboards after the jump…
While watching Election Day coverage and flipping through channels, I found a commercial during a CNN break that immediately caught my attention and made me stop, rewind and watch it twice (second one with my kids). I mean, when a company goes way out of their ’safety zone’ or expected ads and hires a brilliant agency like The Mill NY, the results are magical! Norfolk Southern’s latest ad called “City of Possibilities” is an impressive and beautiful Live-Action/CGI ode to creativity and that child we all have inside. The ad, produced, designed and directed by The Mill NY, features a combination of awesome custom-made toys and lovely animation that I am sure will make you smile. Check the video after the jump AND a cool behind the scenes feature!
Big news for all of us Instagram lovers as the launch of Instagram Profiles on the Web has been announced. Yup, your IG photos will now be easier to
stalk browse and share online thanks to yo your very own custom page… which looks just like your Facebook profile. Really? That’s the best they could do? Although they are not fully available yet, there are a few pages you can check out in the meantime… Opinions?
We all remember Steve Jobs as a humble and simple genius. Although he was one of the most powerful men in the Universe, he loved to stay below the radar and his iconic style – he practically trademarked the black turtle-neck+New Balance kicks look – was a constant reminder of it. But what very few people knew, until its announcement last year and its mention in his biography book, was that Jobs had been working closely with French designer Philippe Starck on a personal project he unfortunately never got to see finished. VENUS is Steve Jobs impressive yacht and it was unveiled last month in Holland. Forget all yachts and boats you’ve seen before, as this -like everything Jobs created- will raise the bar pretty high.
We all know about the perks and benefits of being a Google employee, we’ve also seen many of their extremely cool
offices playgrounds but what most of us have never seen, is what really makes Google the global powerhouse it is. Its Data Centers! And before you walk away thinking this is going to be some geeky post, remember we are talking about Google, so of course even its Data Centers will be fun and impressive. Think of them as a combination of different movie sets like Star Wars + Mission Impossible + Star Trek + a little more Star Wars and a flair of Dr. Evil’s layer. Of course, all in Google signature colors. Get ready to geek out!
