Windows of New York

TheeBlog-WindowsOfNewYork One of the many, many things I love about New York is its legendary and beautiful architecture. I recently found a lovely new site by New York Designer José Guizar that not only features great illustrations but that also confirms my beliefs that New York architecture inspires people n many different levels. Windows of New York is a weekly illustrated site celebrating the variety and beauty of the city’s sometimes underrated gems. Enjoy!

Menswear Dog

TheeBlog-MenswearDog You know those projects and ideas that when you see them, you automatically feel terrible for not thinking – and more importantly, executing them – first? Well, the site I want to share today is a perfect example of this… As men’s fashion awareness is slowly growing and becoming more mainstream, more and more blogs and sites are popping up all over the interweb, and some, like the one we’ll enjoy today, are simply great. Allow me to introduce you to Menswear Dog. A lovely new men’s style and fashion site that features tips and ideas, with a twist – if you can call a dapper Shiba Inu dog a ‘twist’. Enjoy the awesome photos but don’t be fooled by them, the style tips and advice are spot on!

TheeBlog-GoodBooks We all love good books right? Well, if you consider yourself a book worm or even a casual reader, I want to introduce you to Good Books. An organization that will not only provide a wide collection of titles, but will also make you feel good because you are, directly, funding social, medical and environmental projects around the world in partnership with Oxfam. When you buy a book, 100% of the profits are used for these causes. How freakin’ amazing is this!? And to promote this great site, Good Books collaborated with always inspiring The Mill to deliver a beautiful animated novel featuring stunning illustration, animation and way better steamy romance and writting than all Fifty Shades of Grey books together. Check out the short film after the jump and keep on reading!

Luxury Amazon Floating Hotels

TheeBlog-FloatingHotel One of the many treats of growing up in South America was vast variety of climates, regions and proximity to neighboring countries. To celebrate our middle school graduation, my class and I took a school trip deep into the Amazonas River and the beautiful Ecuadorian rain forest that surrounds it. It was an experience I will never forget – and strongly recommend it!. One of the coolest experiences from that trip was definitely our ‘floating hotel’. These hotels smoothly navigate through rivers, providing breath-taking views of nature and landscapes, and taking you places only boats or natives could get to. I recently found an article and was glad to learn that these hotels still exist, and are now ‘luxuring’ things up. M/V Aria and M/V Aqua are Peru’s first luxury floating hotels and are putting a spin on jungle vacations.

The new American Airlines

TheeBlog-AmericanAirlines With so many tasteless and unsuccessful rebrands lately, I must admit I was a bit anxious yesterday when I read about American Airlines releasing a new look “very soon”. Not because I am a fan or a frequent AA flyer (I try to avoid it like I do Lindsay Lohan) but because deep down I knew this would not be good. You see, there’s this inexplicable obsession with shinny-3D bullshit going around, and unfortunately, it is devouring what’s left of those great iconic and legendary logos many generations grew up with. The new look features a new “evolved” icon more fitted for a small private jet company, and a few changes including new gradients, and as-american-as-you-can-get aircraft graphics.

Dumb Ways to Die

TheeBlog-DumbWaysToDie It’s Friday! And let’s be honest, a few of us will eventually do some dumb things over the weekend, like watching Maid in Manhattan on TBS, attempt to fix our electrical wiring at home or simply get a bit wasted at a club. So, to prevent any tragedies and to simply remind ourselves to be safe and use common sense from time to time, I want to share a fun video I recently discovered and loved! “Dumb Was to Die” is a brilliant PSA by Metro Trains Melbourne combining safety with fun (yet dumb) situations, lovely characters, a very catchy jingle and subtle-yet-impressive design and animations. If you’ve been thinking about eating super glue, outrunning a train, selling your kidneys on the internet or pushing that red button… watch this video! It will definitely entertain you (and have you singing the jingle the rest of the day) but it might also save your life :)

Their complete body of work is beautiful but, their Type work is truly impressive! Their intricate, detailed and oh so beautiful type experiments perfectly combine architecture, geometry, creativity and a deep love for letters, creating lovely multi-layered and 4D pieces. A concept new look for Facebook

TheeBlog-FacebookRebrandConcept So, 2013 is here and I am sure we will see a fair share of good and bad corporate ‘rebrands’. And speaking of rebranding, a cool and interesting trend that has developed over the last couple of years is the self-initiated, conceptual corporate rebrand by Designers all over the world. In short, these are conceptual case studies created by Designers who do more than just complain about ugly design or the need for an aesthetic update. Fred Nerby, an Australia based Interactive Art Director & Designer, is one of these Designers who decided to take matter into his own hands and give Facebook a new look. Big kudos to Fred for a great new UX/UI design(although I am not a fan of the Windows 8 look) and a very detailed and very well planned study. Check out his study after the jump!

Virgin does it again…

TheeBlog-VirginAirlinesHeroes There are many reasons why Virgin Airlines and its divisions are some of the best in the business. (Number 1 in my radar. Get it… radar…) Many perfectly combined factors like strong and very well executed branding, impeccable, fun, and comfortable planes and impressive customer service and in-flight experience come together to create the image and company many love. Another crucial factor has to be their marketing and advertising campaigns. I know we’ve shared a few in this blog, and today is no exception. Virgin’s newest campaign video called “Flying in the face of ordinary” features a group of extraordinary kids with supernatural abilities – Yes, of course these are all Virgin employees :) Think of it as a mix between X-Men and Heroes, with a twist of Richard Branson.

Daily Dishonesty

TheeBlog-DailyDishonesty Remember that diet you were supposed to start last Monday? No? It’s OK, we all tend to ‘forget’ some of our promises. We’ve all promised lied at one point in our lives, or maybe on a daily basis… when we chat with our significant other, our friends or bosses, these innocent “Of course everyone likes you” or “Oh yeah, it looks nice” sometimes simply just come out. Today I want to share a collection of daily little lies, beautifully designed and illustrated by New York based Designer and Illustrator Lauren Hom called Daily Dishonesty. Each one of these common and true statements and promises is unique and features stunning type and enviable lettering. Bet you never saw better looking lies…

Creative Catharsis by Sharp Suits

TheeBlog-SharpSuits I believe the saying goes, “Common sense is the least common of all senses”, and unfortunately, this is very true. I know many retail and customer service professionals deal with mind-boggling requests, arguments and comments regularly but we ‘creatives’ also get our fair share of WTF? gems almost on a daily basis. Oh, and there is no discrimination… these gems could come from your sales team, ‘marketing gurus’, account executives, and of course…. clients. To celebrate? these frustrating gems, Sharp Suits launched a great collaborative exhibition called A Creative Catharsis featuring a collection of posters created by Ireland Designers. Check out some of these great and oh so real posters after the jump…

Sans Cursive

TheeBlog-SansCursive Monday was my son’s first day of third grade already :( ! And although he was happy to see his friends and start a new year, one of his concerns when he got home was that this year, all his tests and half of his homework need to be done in cursive. Now, you can only imagine my joy upon hearing this as I attempted to explain to him how great this was, giving me another reason to smile and happily pay for his tuition. Thing is, many states have adopted the Common Core State Standard Initiative, completely dropping cursive handwriting instruction from their mandatory courses. You see, cursive is a proven and essential tool to develop fine motor skills that needs to be taught, not dropped. Fortunately, there are many people that share this belief like Indiana based Designer named Cristina Vanko, a talented Designer who I recently had the pleasure of meeting through TheDailyGlyph.com and whose love for type and cursive inspired her beautiful school thesis named ‘Sans Cursive‘, a petition addressed to National Governors Association, asking for cursive to be reinstated in classrooms across America. I invited Cristina to chat about her project and idea behind it. Enjoy it after the jump and please, keep teaching your kids cursive!
