Impressive Portraits by Heather Rooney

TheeBlog-HeatherRooney Since many of us are suffering from World Cup withdrawals, I’ll continue to post football-related articles every now and then as we smoothly switch back to ‘normal’ mode. Today I want to post the stunning and hypnotic portraits of self-taught illustrator Heather Rooney. I saw a couple of heather’s photo-realistic portrait videos during the World Cup, featuring players like Neymar, Ronaldo, Messi, Dempsey, and Rooney – as well as celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Paul Walker, Dwyane Wade – and I had to share them! Enjoy.

Game of Thrones Soccer Uniforms

TheeBlog_GameOfThrones_SoccerKits Whether you like soccer or not, you can’t escape it this summer. The World Cup has taken over and that’s a good thing – Hey! It’s only every four years so cut us some slack!. What I do know most of you enjoy is good TV series. So, what if we combine one of the most popular and successful series right now and the World Cup? Spanish Designer, Nerea Palacios did, and the result is pretty impressive. Inspired by HBO’s Game of Thrones, Nerea created complete soccer kits for the major houses of Westeros. Check them out after the jump!

Donovan’s World Cup

The day is finally here for the US as we face Ghana (again). And although we’ll be cheering and supporting our boys, we can’t help it… we’ll miss Donovan! – This better work Klinsmann… Donovan has always been the heart and soul of this team, not to mention, the most talented player we’ve ever had. But what I like most, is that he’s a cool dude, and based on his latest ads, he seems to be handling his stay pretty well… Let’s go USA!

Great Goals by Richard Swarbrick

The day is finally here!!! The World Cup starts today, so if you still have not noticed, you might be seeing a few World Cup related posts every now and then. And it’s all good, because this only happens every 4 years (that’s what I keep telling my wife), so let’s live it up! In order to celebrate, today we’ll combine World Cup and #ThrowBackThursday with a beautiful animation video by the extremely talented Richard Swarbrick, featuring great, classic goals from previous tournaments. Enjoy!

Adidas x World Cup

TheeBlog-AdidasWorldCup If you thought that Nike or Beats were the only ones releasing epic mini-film commercials, you are wrong! Adidas has also been busy creating spots for this World Cup. Unfortunately, they seem to always fall short when it comes to popularity and excitement. So, while Nike might have Neymar, Ronaldo, and company, Adidas decided to push ‘their’ players including Messi, Luis Suarez, Dani Alves, Bale, Zidane and of course, Beckham. Check out some of their spots and you decide if they measure up to what their competition keeps creating…

The Last Game

Yesterday we enjoyed a lovely spot by Beats, and although a lot of people were unsure if it had triumph or gained more attention than Nike’s original World Cup mini-film “Winner Stays(HERE) there’s one unspoken law in advertising. Never, never underestimate Nike. As part of their Risk Everything campaign, Nike dropped a new mini-film, this time animated, featuring iconic players like Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, Rooney, Iniesta, Howard, Ribery, and the one player that started it all, Ronaldo. Check out the lovely film as we’re only 2 days away from initial kick-off!

The Game Before the Game

Last week, Beats by Dre dropped a beautiful World Cup Commercial that took over the interwebz, featuring a team of international players including Neymar, Luis Suarez, Cesc Fabregas, (If you’re still not familiar with these names, get on it! The World Cup starts this week!) and a couple of guests celebrities and athletes like LeBron James, Lil’ Wayne, and Serena Williams. The Game before the Game takes us behind all the cameras and fame, and chronicles players – and fans’ preparations before a crucial game. And although the commercial was a huge success, according to a Ghana FA spokesperson, the brand has been banned from the World Cup by FIFA due to sponsorship (Sony) conflict. We’ll see what happens…

So, Shakira rips Woodkid

TheeBlog-Woodkid_Shakira Being that this World Cup’s song is not what everyone was expecting and has received a lot of criticism, Shakira decided she would step in again and save the day by releasing a song (remember Waka Waka) and a new video featuring a couple of iconic players like Neymar, Messi, and of course, Piqué. There’s only one little problem. The video is a cheap, blatant copy of Woodkid’s Iron music video – you know, that lovely music video we enjoyed a couple of years ago (HERE) . The copy is pretty obvious. From the way the set is arranged, to the elements, animals, effects and even camera shots. In fact, they’re shot in the same order! There’s no such things as “inspiration” when you pretty much recreate shot by shot another video and switch an owl with an eagle. And for those of you thinking I’m hating, I am sorry, but if there’s something I truly hate, is copies and unoriginal people cashing in on someone else’s work. So yes, I will call you out. I mean, it’s Shakira, did they really think nobody would notice???

2014 FIFA World Cup Song

So! The World Cup finally kicks off in 22 days, and if you are like me, you’re already warning friends and family that you will be unavailable and disconnected during game hours, or planning get-togethers and BBQs to watch the games. I mean, we wait four long years for this! Since we’re talking World Cup, the new music video for the official song was recently released and it features Pitbull, Jennifer Lopez and Claudia Leitte. Unfortunately, it’s not what I (and perhaps many) was expecting for a Brazilian World Cup. Yes, no other song will be as powerful and iconic as Shakira’s but… Why the would give it to Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez?? The painful lyrics are beyond poor, don’t even rhyme, and feel half-assed. The only good part is when brazilian singer Claudia Leitte steps in and gives the song some much needed brazilian flavor and credibility by dropping 4 lines in portuguese – And some serious legs. With so much Brazilian talent and with such a rich musical history, WHY PITBULL?

Nike World Cup Ads

The World Cup is almost here! (44 days if you want to get specific) and as you can imagine, beautiful and exciting ad spots are appearing everywhere daily. I mean, when it comes to advertising and promotion, you can’t really escape a phenomenon like this (Unless you live in the US), and that is a great thing! And when you think of great campaigns and spots, NIKE always manages to stay on top of the game with impressive and brilliantly executed ideas. The theme and campaign for this World Cup is Risk Everything, and its latest ad, featuring players like Ronaldo, Neymar, Ibrahimovic, Rooney, Higuain, Howard, Pirlo, Iniesta, and a couple more is pure magic as it takes you back to school days games (You know you and your friends always personified your favorite players). Check out more videos after the jump!

The GameChanger

TheeBlog-TheGameChanger The World Cup is only 83 days away!!! And if you are like me, you’re already looking for extra DVR storage alternatives, planning out your sports bar itinerary and times and letting everyone know that you will be busy and disconnected for a month. One thing I do hate during the tournament is asking every restaurant or bar to switch replays of college golf tournament broadcasts to live World Cup games – it happens. But hey! Now there’s a solution for that! The geniuses at beIN Sports developed a vuvuzela with the ability to flip any channel, to their station, giving us football fans the power (at least for one happy month)!

RIO

TheeBlog-RIO For these past couple of days, all conversations with friends, rivals and family members have focused on next year’s World Çup, and the qualifying games going on this week. I mean, is there a bigger and more important sporting event in the world? Don’t think about it, the answer is no. And of course, since the World Cup will take place in Brasil, we’re all either practicing words or checking out videos… just in case. Today I want to share a lovely video I recently found featuring the majestic beauty of Rio de Janeiro and its iconic landmarks like Copacabana, Cristo Redentor, Ipanema, Barra da Tijuca, many more… This post is also dedicated to my dad, whose always awesome tales about his favorite city have sparked my curiosity and hopefully, future travels. And who is probably Rio’s biggest ambassador! :)

Russia 2018 it is!

TheeBlog-Russia2018
Today, FIFA announced Russia as the host of the 2018 World Cup beating candidates (and favorites) England, Spain-Portugal, and Belgium-Netherlands. I really thought this would have been an easy win for the brits but it was also mentioned they only managed to get 2 (out of 22) votes. Seriously? Check out some of the bidding material from the new winner including a video presentation of the new and planned stadiums.

World Cup. Halfway there…Photos

TheeBlog-WorldCupHalfway
Some people say this World Cup has been a disaster, some people say it’s been a great one (after a slow start of course) but to be honest, all these opinions have been nulled completely by the lovely Vuvuzelas. And no, I don’t have anything against them considering they are part of South Africa’s folklore. We’re almost there… the final is near and I’m sure it will be a great (Argentina vs Brazil derby) match. And since there are no games today and tomorrow, let’s look back and reminisce some great moments and amazing photos courtesy of The Boston Globe.
